Recruitment into the Faceless Men was not a matter of birthright but of selection, each member chosen by the Mask of the Faceless — items said to be carved from the ancient wood of a tree fed by the River of Souls. The masks allowed them to don the appearance of those who had passed, granting them the means to integrate into new roles and societies effortlessly. However, this power came at a significant personal cost: each use gradually eroded their true self, leaving them increasingly intertwined with the essence of the mask.

Generations passed, and the distinction between the assassins and their masks grew fainter. The Faceless Men became indistinguishable from the identities they wore, a collective of many who once were, now forged into a singular purpose through the transformative power of their masks. 🎭🔄🤫

Mask of the Faceless

Wondrous item, very rare

This unassuming mask is carved from pale, almost luminescent wood, with grain patterns that swirl around the eyeholes and mouth. When worn, it lies flush against the skin and feels as light as a feather.

Once per year, as an action, you can activate the Mask of the Faceless by placing it upon your face and concentrating on a deceased creature you have seen. The mask magically and permanently alters your appearance and voice to match that of the deceased creature. You determine the specifics of the changes, including coloration, hair length, and sex. You can also adjust your height and weight, but not so much that your size changes. You can make yourself appear as a member of another race, though none of your game statistics change. You can't duplicate the appearance of a creature you've never seen, and you must adopt a form that has the same basic arrangement of limbs that you have. Your clothing and equipment aren't changed by this spell.

After using this ability, the mask melds into your face and becomes a fixed part of your new identity. You retain this new appearance permanently, or until you use an action to consciously will yourself back to your original form. The mask then reappears as a physical object that can be removed; however, if the mask is removed without willing the change, the new appearance remains, and the mask cannot be used again by any creature for one year.
