Power-ups, Power-ups, Everywhere...

Dear Insane Children,
...and not an enemy to kill! It's my sincere hope that Asylum will feature sections (sections, mind you, not the entire game) where Alice (Dressed in Rage) becomes a sort of two-legged lawnmower in vast fields of her enemies. Seeing a 13-year-old girl vent her frustration and rage in the vivid sanctuary of her mind upon masses of mental demons needs to be one of our primary goals in delivering this new game.
I'd like frustrated people everywhere to play the game and think, "Take THAT you f'ing, f's" - especially in those moments when things in Real Life are just getting to be too much.
It's important - perhaps critical to a successful existence - that we embrace our shadow. Have I preached this before? Fine, it needs preaching again: Being too nice is how you end up being chewed on by wolves. You've got to recognize and embrace your own personal malice, anger, and destructive potential - and then keep it safely in your pocket for those moments when you really need it.
Alice keeps her rage in a handy little Rage Box and snorts a bit when things get tough. Though during our last livestream we did talk about how that particular game design is less-than-ideal. At a minimum it was a power-up which needed better level design built around it.
For the new game we're now playing around with the idea that Alice has this massive wardrobe of dresses... here's a small sample...

And that each of these dresses could have an alternate Chaos or Rage mode player is able to trigger at-will. Omri's latest Rage Dress image shows how that might be reflected on two of Alice's dresses, "Original" and "Denial."
What are your thoughts on power-ups, triggering them, and multiple modes for our collection of dresses? Comments below - and be sure to use SUGGESTION and QUESTION tags if you say something worthy of being called out during the next livestream.
Speaking of...
We've scheduled a LIVESTREAM for Thursday, September 6th @ 9AM Hong Kong Time. Do The Thing and set a reminder by clicking that link!

If you're looking for another symbol, you could use the bull, because of the horns, and bulls can be quite ragey when they want to be.

I love, love, love the whole Death Time Dress and the pocket watch is so cool! Maybe that pocket watch could be made and for sale on Mysterious? I'd buy it! :) SUGGESTION: I did enjoy the Rage power up in AMA and Omri's designs are great, however I like the idea of a Chaos power up instead of the Rage power up (I believe the idea was mentioned in a live stream?) I really like the idea that each game has it's own unique power up: AMA Rage, AMR Hysteria, and now a Chaos for Asylum.

Deathtime dress and denial rage dress is just great! love it

SUGGESTION: Collectible Power-ups in the shape of stuffed animals, such as:
- Bear: Power
- Rabbit: Speed
- Hare: Super-jump
- Cat (like her pet cat): Secret-finding vision
- Doremouse: Shrink and scamper
- Lulu (bonus): magnetic to all pick-ups.

Yes!! Seeing an alternate mode to the dress could make them more of a game mechanic..TBH the dresses in AMM were amazing fun (quirky and imaginative designs)---though I always wanted more..and more..more dresses pls :D THX AMERICAN n LULU n OMRI <3

Love the new dress, might be my fave so far!
2018-09-05 20:23:05 +0000 UTC
I LOVE the rage mode design that Omri drew with wings and horns and red eyes and stuff >___> and I agree with him that the rage mode could be a collectable (as I stated in my previous livestream superchat) and you would be able to carry just a couple... or otherwise well placed rage boxes... Or both!? :o
The DeathTime dress looks weird, in a weird way... Doesn't really convince me but it's rather an interesting concept~

Digging having a single place where all the dress designs are compiled. It's great seeing them all together.
EDIT: Well okay, that's not all of them, but..! 'd still like to collect all of my suggestions for the abilities the dresses may confer upon Alice and put them in one place. So here you go. I hope I got 'em all.
SUGGESTION: BARGAINING DRESS
Passive - Increase drop rate / value or speed.
Active - Increase 1 combat stat at the cost of another. Roll a die to determine which stat is decreased.
Drawbacks - never know what you'll get. Hope you saved, boi.
SUGGESTION:BLACKENING DRESS
Passive - darkens immediate surroundings, making it harder for enemies to spot Alice (stealth?).
Active - allows player to select day/night, short-range Apparation or paired portals like in 'Portal.'
Drawbacks - high mana cost for Active skills, Alice can lose consciousness until recovery. No combat boost, but can vanish for a short time even if discovered. Enemy comes to investigate, and if the player times it right, they get bored and wander off before becoming exhausted and visible again. If unlucky, though...
SUGGESTION: BLOOD DRESS
Passive - Float / Flutter prototype moves. Maybe even upward motion too, for platforming.
Active - Faster healing, weakens poison, increases speed.
Drawbacks - No combat boost, perhaps increased aggression (Alice automatically approaches / attacks enemies) due to increased adrenaline.
SUGGESTION: CHAOS DRESS
Passive - 'randomize' nearby power-ups, collectibles, or spawns.
Active - random combat boost. Maybe it can change the day-night cycle.
Drawback - It's random, so never can plan or tell. Again, hope you saved.
SUGGESTION: CHRONOS DRESS
Passive Mode: Slows enemy movement or attacks in proximity to Alice. Maybe the longer her current hitstreak, the more they're slowed. Hitstreak would be broken by switching from Passive to Active Mode or back.
Active Mode: Similar to in 'Braid,' ties Alice's direction of movement to also moving her surroundings forward or backward in time, allowing the player to set up a desired Rube Goldberg-style chain of events and solve puzzles. In combat, this could be used to force enemies to move forward into traps, or backwards to give Alice more breathing space.
Drawbacks: Passive Mode's slowing affect would also slow enemies' progress toward a desired point if Alice is near. Or even desired allies, like the Insane Child who could trigger a switch in 'AMA.' Active Mode's Time Movement makes time's flow in Alice's area completely dependent on her moving forward or backward. If she's standing still, time pauses completely, affecting platforming, etc.
Since the CIRCUS DRESS is something Alice is being forced to wear, perhaps it shouldn't have an Active (ON) Mode, so there's no powered-up state. Alice must thus find her own strength to free herself from the Tweedles.
SUGGESTION: CONFIDENCE DRESS
Passive - Slower but higher defence, and hits also hit harder.
Active - Alice becomes like the team Tank. Perhaps for short periods she can become invulnerable to damage, but be really slow or even unable to move so she can take big hits for a time. Alternatively, she could unleash a short burst of powered swings.
Drawback - Temporary exhaustion and paralysis.
Bonus Round - As Alice fights and takes damage the armour could break and fall off. Her defence falls but her speed rises, bringing her to a more balanced combat state. The dress itself would eventually blend to the default Wonderland dress, so the player would only be able to use it afterward as a collectible item in the game. Otherwise it's completely broken after taking a certain amount of damage. Alternatively, don't take as much damage to preserve it. But do you protect Alice by protecting the dress?
SUGGESTION: DENIAL DRESS
Passive - secondary activated vision like Shrink Mode in AMR.
Active - On activation, can block a single attack or change state (ie: poison).
Drawbacks - Cannot see 'real' world while using Denial Vision. Damage is doubled when taken from behind even in Active Mode, which has a 5 second cooldown as well.
SUGGESTION: FIRE DRESS
Passive - Burn damage to enemies and environs that are close by. Alice has burning protection.
Active: Increases attack damage and does DoT for a short time. Can be explosive if charged.
Drawbacks: The burning. Also Alice's PTSD, etc. so it takes a long time for her to be able to use it, and she cannot use it for long until she conquers her fear of fire and some of her guilt. The better her mental state, the longer she can us it, yet she cannot be 'cured' in this game...
SUGGESTION: HARVEST DRESS
Passive: Increases speed and stealth.
Active: Increases attack or defends with Ruin tentacles that break off after being hit. The player and Alice may choose whether to use it in Active Attack or Active Defense Mode.
Drawback: During Active use, a black haze encroaches on the player's vision, making it harder to see and control Alice. If the player lets the haze cover the screen, Alice loses consciousness for a time, leaving her completely vulneable for that moment. While this happens, a Tiny Ruin detaches and slinks off, planting a seed for 'AMR.' Neither Alice nor the player ever see these Tiny Ruin, however the more there are, the more they can put tiny obstacles in Alice's way, or move power-ups or pick-ups from their expected locations. Not enough to stop her, or even slow her down more than a moment, but enough to maybe wonder...
SUGGESTION: KING OF PLANETS
Passive Ability - Draws smaller objects and enemies slowly toward it.
Active Ability - Short-range teleportation / evasion at small mana cost.
Drawback - Slow recharge if spammed; larger objects and enemies draw Alice toward them while worn.
SUGGESTION: MERCURY DRESS
A bright, liquid-metal dress is a unique idea in this setting. Maybe to show its liquid and poisonous state it could writhe a bit as Alice wears it, even in Passive (OFF) Mode. But I would only recommend having it drip onto the environment while in Active (ON) Mode or shortly after switching back to Passive Mode since the drips would poison the surroundings.
Maybe each dress could move in a certain way unique to its nature, helping her get past certain obstacles. Like maybe the Mercury and Harvest Dresses can create tendrils to walk over low walls or pick up fallen columns, trees, etc. and get them out of Alice's way. But only in Active Mode.
Passive: Low poison DoT to objects and enemies in close proximity to Alice.
Active: Medium poison DoT to enemies within 3m of Alice, plus low poison DPS to enemies struck with melee weapons.
Drawbacks: Increases Alice's insanity the more she uses it, either making her movements more erratic and more difficult to control, or making it so she activates her dresses' Active Modes on her own at lower provocations as she uses it. Increased use will increase her overall chances of simply falling to the madness corrupting her Wonderland.
SUGGESTION: NORMAL DRESS
Passive - increases all stats (empowerment), more than her Wonderland version of the ASYLUM DRESS, which could have minimal affect, if any. Likewise, the HOSPITAL DRESS probably shouldn't have any power-ups, or even an Active Mode.
Active - short bursts of speed or strength.
Drawbacks - short cooldown between bursts, but nothing unusual as this is the default dress. Maybe she can get it after the Circus Dress as a result of winning free of the Tweedles.
SUGGESTION: How about having two ways of activating RAGE:
1) Collect a number of shards to activate Rage on demand.
2) Collect a Rage Box to activate Rage on pick-up.
Duration on the Shard version might be shorter to encourage use of the Rage Box.
2018-09-05 19:24:32 +0000 UTC
EDIT: Also, the dress design is BACKWARDS, isn't it? Clever Omri.
2018-09-05 19:22:49 +0000 UTC
SUGGESTION: How about having two ways of activating Rage:
1) Collect a number of shards to activate Rage on demand.
2) Collect a Rage Box to activate Rage on pick-up.
Duration on the Shard version might be shorter to encourage use of the Rage Box.
Also, if the dresses are going to have Passive and Active Modes, what if Rage force-activates the worn dress's Active Mode?

SUGGESTION: for Rage mode and powerups, I have seen it go down a few different ways. I think one of the fun ones is like in the original Onechunbara game, where your blade gets covered in blood and once you get splattered enough you go into a triggerable "Blood Rage" mode. I think a similar mechanic is done in the First person dungeon crawler Mary Skelter: Nightmares. The fun is having a bevy of enemies, especially weak/smaller ones, that ar around to hack through and build the meter. Damage taken or inflicted builds the meter, so if you get whomped by a bigum hugem you likely can return the favor 1000x over when you get up. :) It allows for a degree of strategy, but also a semi-regular ability that can be enjoyed more than 1-2x a chapter.
Suggestion: For balance and leveling, you can have mechanics that alter her rage meter itself. As well you can alter the rage meter's length per dress, so later dresses have a innately larger meter but last significantly longer, where as earlier the meter can be reasonable but doesn't last all that lost. or vice versa. That in itself would allow players to not only choose their style, but gameplay style too as some folk may want the long buildup and then a significant length of rage and others go the other route.
OR I'd SUGGEST you design a currency (blood, quips, peeves) that you collect through a level as a sort of EXP and then apply them as you like on the dresses you want to apply it to, in 3 categories. "Strength" for overall damage during rage, "Speed" which alters attack speed and movement, or "Duration" which meters how long the rage lasts. Could have a wonderful lil animation of the bits of exp splattering or smearing onto the dress and them soaking in and vanishing. Possibly she stores the "exp" in whatever pendant she carries ? or she could inhale/eat them and when applying them she sneezes/vomits it po on herself and lets it soak in.. that'd be.. unpleasant :)

The rage version of the denial drsss is very cool..the death time dress seems very interesting
2018-09-05 16:02:15 +0000 UTC
so essentially depending on what dress alice is wearing, what power she picks up or activates, alters the dress completely? i like the ides, i think something that would also be cool is the fast you kill and go without hitting the visuals grown more gnarly, bloody, alice starts to essentially start jabbering like the hatter and not making sense because of the " bloodlust " rage shes in. just a thought lol, keep it up American!

I love the Rage dress! Like the pattern on the dress for the denial mode. I think the dresses should all have a denial mode but that may be a tall order. Next dress: I like how the deathtime dress has the reverse look. Pretty awesome! SUGGESTION: For the dresses. How about storing them in a shrunken trunk? Tiny enough to fit in her pocket then have her take it out and it becomes normal size again. I think it would look awesome and is fitting for the time. I’ll see you guys later for the stream!!!
2018-09-05 13:40:15 +0000 UTC
I did like the idea of having Rage and Hysteria as abilities as the group was speaking in the last stream. They can be triggered by how Alice is feeling in-game (Rage= Anger, Hysteria = Sanity Level). They could be separate meters in-battle (Rage increases as you take damage, Hysteria Increases as you deal damage). There are so many possibilities. There is more to game design than I thought and I'm glad we are all able to come together as a group to generate these ideas to continue the Alice franchise!
2018-09-05 13:16:13 +0000 UTC
Or ropes could be moved by dolls and be obstacles Alice would have to cross.

2018-09-05 13:14:22 +0000 UTC
We can have Rage as a bar in battle like in Assassins Creed where the longer your fighting, the bar increases and as you take damage, it goes up faster. After it reached its max, you can then trigger Rage for a period of time and can reuse when the meter gets maxed out again. If you wanted a different "Rage" for each Dress, it can be like Overwatch where each Dress triggers its own Ability
2018-09-05 13:12:43 +0000 UTC
Depending on the game mechanic, I don't want the Rage Mode to always be readily available as it should be "Special" and if I can trigger at any point, it may seem unfair. I did like the idea of it being like the Berserk powerup in Doom when you find it, you have increased speed and power. But, if she is in a constant feeling of rage tied to the story, I am ok with it being triggerable at any point.
2018-09-05 13:09:28 +0000 UTC
As much as I love seeing ever more dress variants, I wonder if we’re reaching a point of power-up overload where the ideas of rage/chaos/hysteria/etc all do essentially the same thing (make Alice strong so she can slaughter her foes) without much to set them (or the game) apart. My SUGGESTION is that there should be one big mad murder mode and that it should be unique to “Asylum” to stand out from AMA’s Rage and AMR’s Hysteria…and that of everything done so far, the Inferno Dress looks like it should be it, both visually and thematically. I would love to see Rage and Hysteria again, but perhaps as the “Shadows” Alice has to conquer as part of her journey, thereby giving them a chance to be unique characters in their own rights and to stretch the limits of those designs to new and interesting places.
My SUGGESTION for the DeathTime Dress relates to the color combo…the brown and white makes me think of a comfy bathrobe, so maybe take the “backwards” design further and either invert the Classic Dress’ color scheme (white dress, blue pinafore) or invert them like a photo negative.
2018-09-05 12:28:07 +0000 UTC
SUGGESTION: What about a Skipping Rope (Jump Rope) as a weapon? They were around in the Victorian era, maybe it can be use two different ways depending on if she was in some type of mode (dress on and off)? Example would be that when she is just fighting that it does normal damage to the enemy but if she is in Rage Mode or one of the more aggressive modes that the jump rope will grab and pull enemies to her.

SUGGESTION: "vent her frustration and rage in the vivid sanctuary of her mind upon masses of mental demons"
In Kingdom Hearts 2 there is a part where you have to fight 100 enemy's by yourself as quickly as possible. Maybe you could do the same with the rage mode

Awesome stuff as always guys :)
The DeathTime dress looks interesting indeed! I like the idea that it's all backwards, though I would not flip vertically the skull in the front and the boots seem too white.
I also like her hair with that dress.
Rage mode is awesome! though I like the ghostly appearance of Hysteria more it's great to have Rage back.
Personally I find the horns and wings to be a bit "meh", I think some more exploring on that can be done.

SUGGESTION: I think it would be a cool idea if Alice could turn back time in this dress, which could be handy with puzzles or sneaking in secret places where you just shouldn't be spotted.
I really love her wardrobe and love the idea of the ragemodes, maybe each dress could have a special ability.
2018-09-05 10:25:48 +0000 UTC
OMG Yes! It's raining dresses. 🤣
I love the idea of a wardrobe!
2018-09-05 10:12:48 +0000 UTC
Love the rage version of the Denial Dress. Also, I find the Death Time Dress super interesting the whole backwards sort of situation with it.

Kris Kross Alice eventually made me think of zombie Klara Hitler and son in American Dad. https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/americandad/images/6/68/BabyHitler.png/revision/latest?cb=20140324124948 Seems Omri Koresh is a big fan of the latest Alice Disney movie. Love it :D

(EXCITED) COMMENT: I wanna see Alice murdering EVERYO¨NE while embracing her shadow. This act of RAGE must be unwrapped at the rhythm of idiophone percussions (made of such materials as metal and/or bones) playing in the background.
QUESTION: What's the difference between her Chaos mode and her Rage mode? I'm not sure if I see the difference, are they both states where she is invincible and over powered? As always, superb art.
2018-09-05 09:43:42 +0000 UTC
I'm 100% on board with this primary goal. It was one of the things that made AMR so therapeutic for me.
I like the idea of power ups/rage mode being applied to each dress. I'm scared to see the circus dress in this rage mode.
A backwards dress?! It looks awesome and feels very Wonderland-esque. Makes me think of the Mad Hatters tea party with the whole un-birthday thing. There could be a chance for a small laugh with the presentation of this dress.
2018-09-05 08:29:40 +0000 UTC
"Seeing a 13-year-old girl vent her frustration and rage in the vivid sanctuary of her mind upon masses of mental demons..." -- that's why we love Tiny Tina from "Borderlands 2".

2018-09-05 08:00:37 +0000 UTC
Really like the look of this iteration of the rage mode and the idea of making it an overlay on each of the different dresses instead of just one transformation common across all of her wardrobe. The horns seem like they’re cleaned up in this version and the transparency works well to deter from a more cartoony look.
SUGGESTION: As far as gameplay goes, perhaps a rage bar a la God of War and then a simple trigger by the player when it fills up. Alternately, automatically triggering once said bar is full.
2018-09-05 07:04:43 +0000 UTC
so..... this Deathtime dress is deliberately backwards? (apron-y part on the back and (upside-down)skull bow on the front)

2018-09-05 07:02:00 +0000 UTC
Woah ! I love that idea of stopping time and then be able to rage and those power ups! I love how the wardrobe is getting bigger and bigger
2018-09-05 06:58:24 +0000 UTC
I love the idea of have parts of the game, or areas in each chapter where Alice can just take her frustration out on enemies. With her having a large wardrobe, you could always have DLC like with the second game that unlocks other outfits (ones that don't fit any particular chapter) that have special power-ups and other weapons (or upgrades). I believe the DLC for Madness Returns was only $2 U.S. which made it really afordable.
2018-09-05 06:55:16 +0000 UTC
Good to see you embrace the lore, Stick Boy. XD
2018-09-05 06:54:23 +0000 UTC
