Alice, Come Home!

We often find ourselves torn between worlds. Home, work, school, family, friends, etc. And that's just the surface world. Inside each of us, a battle rages between the worlds of the past - what might have been, what was, and what we wish wasn't; and the future - what we think we can't avoid, what we hope for, and what we fear. These realities exist in our minds - with the present moment being the only real and tangible thing in our existence. But we find it very difficult to live in the present. Always flitting back and forth between alternate imagined or recalled realities.

Lao Tzu said:

“If you are depressed you are living in the past.
If you are anxious you are living in the future.
If you are at peace you are living in the present.”

Like many of us, our Alice is living a split existence and seeking a way back to reality - to the present moment. What makes her journey - our journey - so difficult is the "why" or the "how" associated with events we found painful or goals we fear are unattainable.

The two recent covers by Joey do a good job I think of expressing the concept of dual realities and the pain associated with these ideas. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Now that I'm back home I'm also dealing with a range of challenges - past, present, and future which will occupy most of my time before returning to Thailand in 3 weeks for the start of Pirate Jam 2018.

In that time we'll be back with several live streams where we can catch up on all your comments and questions.

We'd also like to set a new Patreon goal at 1000 Patrons - perhaps built around sending everyone a set of fabric sew-on patches inspired by Alice and related iconography. What do you think?

For the previous goal - the Inmate Certificates - now that I'm back to Shanghai Alex is going to design those, we'll print and sign them, and then mail them out before my next trip.

TONS of stuff to catch up on! Expect another update in the coming days with live stream details and other news.

Why is Alice left-handed? This is a violation of the canon. https://youtu.be/fTFmbetoFa8

Yes.

I guess this Alice it's a good stylistic compromise between the first Alice and AMR. She looks younger, she has no blood stains on the knife or apron. She looks more innocent. I'm still not sure about her hair colour though. The first Alice had brown hair, the second black. I think a dark brown could resolve the hair colour controversy.

In my opinion, Alice needs have hair black because their features of "madness" would stand out much more. Having dark brown hair, facial traits are softened and lost.

This is a good contrast between the dark imagery and the lighter wonderland stuff, which I would like to see more of. Breaks up the constant blacks, metals and fire. This would make a great cover.

This is fantastic love the duality presentation. I'll have to rejoin in the next two weeks because I have to swap out a now defunct credit card and wait for a new one.

Beautiful! I think I like this one even better than the previous one (which is quite the feat!)

I am so happy to see this! This is the art style we need to go for! Reminiscent of the original art and design of the first game. Doesn't look too hand drawn, it has some realism to it but still otherworldly. Really pleased with this! Keep it up!!

The art is looking good, I like it. As I have said in the previous post, the Vorpal Blade is missing its intricate designs.

Wonderful work.

Just beautiful I love the flame burning away and exposing wonderland. The idea of the patches makes me super happy and eager for the goal to be achieved :). On a side note I received the chaos necklace I won from the stream, and the chaos shirt I ordered. Thanks again it made my month! Looking forward to more live streams, always very informative and you and Martin bantering back and forth is extremely entertaining. The occasional lulu pop in is also nice! :) Good luck getting everything done before you voyage out again.

Another awesome image, and this Alice reminds a bit of Fiona Douriff (whom I still consider the best looking candidate for an Alice movie). This one shows very clearly, the narrative of being split between worlds. I prefer the previous one, because it's less obvious/direct and gives of a vibe of "something's not right here" which leads to "let's find out what is going". I find it more enticing, because you really can predict it or know what to expect, which I would think is a good situation to be in as a creator. But then, my general artistic philosophy is "less is more", so I prefer the more subtle things, that speaks to the imagination, rather than coming off as "set in stone", you know. "This is what it is". Engaging peoples imagination makes for a more personal experience, I think. I'm generally sensing, that you want to make this a darker game than the previous ones. So should it be a game, that looks darker or feels darker. I recently finished playing Hellblade, and Ninja Theory did an amazing job at making something, that genuinly envokes emotions, rather than just something we tell each other is scary, but isn't actually making you feel scared. So have you considered maybe teaming up with Ninja Theory for Asylum? Apart from doing an outstanding job on Hellblade, they did it at a small(er) budget. Their plan was to make a mid-sized AAA game independently, to prove that you don't need to have huge publisher to finance it, for the price of creative control. So they might have some useful tips and tools on saving money, without compromising the game (: Aaand this is the part, where I leave you :b Ps.: Love the idea of the patches! It would also be a cool way to engage fans, to see how they utilize them (:

I like the idea of sending sew-on patches to us. :)

with a 13-year-old, miss! ;)

These latest art pieces are looking great, not all 100% the THEME or Tone the final game is likely to be but non the less wonderful to look at and likely explore possible tones etc moving forward!
