Idea Hatching

Dear Insane Children,
Lots of new concepts to share with you today!
First off, two lovely pieces from Sonny - a baby Jabberwocky and our old friend Mock Turtle. I've asked Sonny to pull the style in closer to our expectations from Madness Returns. While I think it's interesting to see a lot of these characters in their pre-fire state, it's clear we all agree that we shouldn't sacrifice our "look" for the sake of that concept.
During the last live stream I probably mentioned my "concept art as tattoo" theory - basically that we want to see characters rendered in such a way as to make them "tattoo ready" - it's an easy question, "Would I have this inked on my body?" With these two new images I for one can answer that with a solid, "Yes."

Speaking of tattoos... the 13th is my birthday and I'm leaning heavily towards getting a Chaos symbol done on my back. I like the idea of being reminded of chaos always lurking behind us.
Up next we have a bunch of new images from Joey. I've been talking with her about Alice's abilities and how that impacts game play. She's taken some of our chats and riffed on a couple of concept images...

We're working towards listing Alice skills and abilities. These will help define the sorts of puzzles and obstacles we encounter in Wonderland. We've got things like slowing time, dress gliding/floating, climbing, pushing/pulling (perhaps with little magical helpers), and more...
Joey is also taking a stab at defining our primary enemies. She's focused in on a horrific combo of fire and dolls. Since the doll enemies in A:MR were some of my favorites (at least in terms of art direction), I am a big fan of this idea. What do you think?
Tonight, I'm off to the premier of Tsui Hark's latest film here in Shanghai. As many of you know he's keen to direct an Alice film and our discussions around this topic continue moving forward. I'll be updating him on all the latest art and design coming out of Asylum and see if there's a way to link Asylum pre-production with efforts which might help us move forward towards a live action film. Fingers crossed!
We'll have another live stream later this week (aiming at Thursday morning in Shanghai). Be sure to share your comments and ideas in the comments below and we'll discuss everything during the stream.
From Chilly Shanghai,
-American
Love the Mock Turtle - he was one of my favorites from the first game. I replayed it a few months ago and the underwater sequence gave me no end of torment - its great. Can't wait to see more of the surroundings for the game!

Loving the new concepts, the Turtle is a great throwback to the style of the first game with that little of the second :D,
Would it be possible to get a slightly higher resolution/would you have issues with adding some animation to these.
You have seen my work in the past regarding animating the official Alice images.

I see that there are some people who are too fixated on the element of the fire that killed Alice's family and coming up with ideas based on the fire. Which is great, but we need to look at other things like the emotional stages and other parts of Wonderland. We should have Joey or Omri (whoever is more suited) start coming up with artwork of some other areas like the asylum. The namesake of the game is the asylum, so we should work on how it should be presented and what is happening. Right now, we are looking at Wonderland, what about the real world? How does Alice see the real world around her? Who is treating her? How will Alice interact with the real world? How does the citizen of London view the accident of the fire?

Baby Jabberwocky... so cute.
The art is now resembling the Alice "look" that we all know and love.
I'm really enjoying it. Just became a supporter today too by the way! Yay!
I really love idea with slowing down time with the watch. It would make for some interesting puzzles and awesome to be used during combat. Slow-mo effects! Could you imagine slowing down time to make that swift near dodge or parrying an attack? Even just to watch Alice make the final blow on an enemy or boss... That would be epic.
The dolls fused together, amazing! Although I agree with the others, the dolls have more of a Bumby feel so they shouldn't be the main enemies at first. Slowly ease them in and then they can be the main enemies toward the end since Bumby was the one who caused the fire. Still, seeing them all torn apart and burnt and melty after the fire sounds sweet.
For Alice's abilities, I love the thought of another Hysteria type mode. But having Alice with a burnt black dress, and her hair erupt into beautiful red with a glowing flame effect. Along with the sketch of the black butterflies for dodging. Having ash and little flame particles emanating from her as she goes on a rampage... Yes.
And paintings for portals to other levels? I really like the sound of that. Make sure to keep Alice switching dresses in each new environment. Love, love, loved that! Everything is looking great! Keep up the great work! Can't wait to see more!
One last thing... HAPPY BIRTHDAY! (ノ^ヮ^)ノ*:・゚✧

Continuing on from the ‘walking through mirrors’ concept by RozendaalAstrolabes.com and icekiller158, what if this was merged with the ‘paintings with figures leaning out’ and ‘step into the paintings world’ concepts by Joey? Where there would be frames and inside the frames aren’t paintings, but instead the actual part of wonderland she would be entering and pieces of wonderland could be coming through the frame, making the frames portals and not paintings. Also, as fire is a major theme in Asylum and during a fire, mirrors will most often shatter, as they are glass, so shards of mirror could be on the frame as well, to keep the looking glass element. Here is an example: https://imgur.com/a/AUOeH

Loving the Artwork from Sonny. Looking a lot better and more closer to the style that makes American Mcgee's Alice, American Mcgee's Alice.
Seeing baby Jabberwocky hatching from an egg is interesting. We could associate baby Jabberwocky hatching from the egg with an emotion, maybe the emotion of survivor's guilt.
The Mock Turtle looking sad as always, I wonder what his story might be. Also, he is missing his horns and his appearance from the first game to Madness Returns is quite different, so I'm not really sure how we can make it so that everything will be consistent and not have flaws. Too many flaws in a game will make the whole story fall apart.
The doll mashup are looking great, it gives the sense of horror without being a straight up horror game. Now, we all know that Bumby caused the fire, but Alice didn't at this point in time. So we have to slowly ease in the dolls little by little at the ending half of the story, but Alice still not really sure of these dolls. We can have a silhouette of The Dollmaker in the background of the fire stage of Wonderland, but we do not fight it as that is what we do in Madness Returns. We should NOT make the silhouette obvious, but noticeable enough for the players to see it.
I really do like to see more bosses in this game, hopefully we will get a good amount that is satisfying. In terms of enemies, the dolls should not be the primary enemies we see in the games, we should have other enemies like the Ruins or enemies in line with the theme of the area.
Building on RozendaalAstrolabes.com's idea of mirrors, Through the Looking-Glass started off with Alice going through the mirror into an alternate dimension of Wonderland. So we could use that concept of Alice walking through mirrors to access different places.
As for the abilities, time manipulation is an interesting concept. We could have Alice acquire the Magic Pocket Watch from the White Rabbit during the story, in which he gives her a quest associated with the pocket watch.
An idea to add to the quirkiness of Wonderland, we could have Alice walking on walls and ceiling of places. As you see here, https://imgur.com/6kG8KvQ , the stairs will be more of a slope and merges with the wall. With the more powerful engines today, we could make this happen, and have the camera rotate and move in a seamless motion.
Also, American should address this and make it more clear. https://imgur.com/ghKTzX0 I have already responded to them. I read everything!!

1) Love the baby Jabberwocky, I want it as a plush toy right now (will go next to my Cthulhu).
2) Dolls + Fire = Cool. Creepy dolls are always fun and there is a lot you can do with that, the different amounts of burny, melty and ashy just opens up a lot and dealing with the aspect of this being right after "The Fire" before the first game.
3) With the idea of gaining abilities and having a hub world it might be inter sting to add a little "metroidvania*" to it. Where you can go back to old levels after you gain a new power and more has opened up. This aspect I think ties well into the concept of moving through grief and finding acceptance. One part you could not do at first but after things come to pass it becomes easy. 4) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

This is all so insanely beautiful. I'm really glad A:MR is such a big inspiration in the sorts for Asylum. You guys are magnificent with all you think up! I love it. Can't wait to see more.
The dolls were also one of my favorite things from A:MR. But if I'm completely honest, it's hard for me to pick just one things that's a favorite. The story and art itself is just so different from anything, it's what makes its so beautiful and unique.
Also loved Alice switching outfits in each new environment.

First of all, artwork is incredible! I’ve just started supporting the Patreon and I’ve loved everything I’ve seen so far.
I really like idea of the toys going through states of decay and burning in the Doll Devil/Horse Doll picture. If we’re going more on the stages of grief in this one, having everything slowly decay and become more evil and frightening looking as we go through the stages will work really well. I’m just not too sure about having too many actual dolls though. It’s just that the dolls make me think more of Bumby and his storyline and world, rather than whatever villain may be central in this game.
Having some messed up version of the parents like in the second photo of illustrations is brilliant as well. I know in MR the Queen looked like Lizzie, but I had always wanted to see some messed up version of her parents in the games, and having them sortof be fused together works really well. Being young, Alice would most likely think of her parents as together in one unit and not really separate entities, and it makes sense to have them be “together” in this messed up version of her Wonderland.
Forgive me if this has already been stated previously, I’m still working through all the previous livestreams and Patreon posts and can’t remember if it was stated in the ones I have watched/read. I know that this game is going to be mostly based on the stages of grief, and it would be really amazing to see you and your team’s take on it with different worlds for each of the seven stages. We had different worlds with vastly different environments (and dresses! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ ) in MR, it would be amazing to see what Joey or Sonny could come up with for environments in the stage of anger & bargaining, depression and loneliness, etc.

Maybe it's a good idea to change enemy type based on the choice or encounter alice made in reality world? Like alice may meet different kinds of lunatics/psychopaths in asylum, so the reflection of their personality can appear as enemy/monsters in alice wonderland. It will be really great if there are more connections built between the reality and wonderland, or even more rpg style. :>

Sonny's new pieces are definitely closer to the series' style; cute "young" variations that are still a bit macabre. Like a few others have said, as creepy as the dolls are, they struck me as being connected to Bumby, the Ruin, and his particular brand of evil which Alice wouldn't be aware of at the time of "Asylum". Perhaps other childhood toys could appear as bad guys instead to keep with the idea of something innocent being twisted into a terrible enemy?

Once again - I love the art, I don't have much to say about them, in particular.
What I wanted to talk about for this post are the concepts shown by Joey. Again, gorgeous and cool and I think on the right track but there are some things that I wanted to put out there.
I love the doll theme - these enemies could be so good - but I think making them a primary enemy type that spawns in every area is a mistake. Thematically - these dolls conjure up thoughts of the Ruin, and doll imagery in general is tied to Bumby. I think Bumby should definitely be a presence in this game, but on a subconscious level, Alice isn't as aware of his treachery - if she even thinks about him at all. I'm sure I wouldn't have remembered all of my parents' students who came for high-tea if my father was the dean at Oxford.
I also really kind of miss encountering the creatures of Wonderland in general and I feel like we have so many creatures who are named in the books and Carroll's poems who haven't had a presence in the games who'd be cool to see.
Don't get me wrong - I think seeing Alice's melted and corrupted toys haunting Wonderland would make great enemies - just specifically doll imagery I'm apprehensive toward and maybe a little fatigued on? Idk.
TLDR **The following idea is the one I'm getting to if you're scrolling through**:
Something that I think that would be a cool venue for all of the things that Joey's drawn AND a way to incorporate the kind of scary horror vibe would be a level that's a combination of the fortress of doors, the Liddell's burning household and the endless hallway from Silent Hills PT - Imagining Alice trying to get to the right door with the right key (perhaps Lizzie's room, since it was the safe place during the fire) but the hallways are shifting, stretching and skewing, burning in an inferno - and around every corner there's a horrific mutilated toy that she can only hide from.

This Mock Turtle ain't nothing but a hound dog crying all the time :D (No kidding, at first, I really thought it was a picture of my great dane.)
As for rooms that all look alike, I just played Exnovem castle level in World of Final Fantasy in which you quickly can't tell where you came from from where you're going to. And that wasn't fun.
Make Nine Inch Nails great again

Hi
I just made a patreon account to give you my idea of an (I think) interesting plotline to Alice. It’s a offtopic but I am new in this forum and don’t know the rules.
I- Alice starts in the "present" (I mean), after Alice Madness Returns.
II- Some problem from the past comes to trouble Alice.
III- Alice have a Flashback for the player.
IV- Alice Asylum plot.
- Playing in the “nice” Wonderland:
A problem I see in the horror genre of movies is they kill the characters BEFORE giving time to know them. If the player has time in the “nice” wonderland, the “madness” wonderland will be more of a shocking to play.
- Alice fights in her mind to accept the facts and learns as a person.
The world and clothes could change like the seasons of the year but in every phase of her trauma.
When she is developed in a narrative level, she could obtain the aspect of the previous games as a symbol of her new state of mind.
V- Alice confronts the problem in the present, remembering the lessons learnt in the past, and the ending. It would be interesting to develop her new life after Madness Returns and the power of her “wonderland fused with real world” thing.
With this method you can make Alice Asylum as a prequel and, in the same time, make a sequel of Madness returns giving the player more progress in the life of Alice.
I wish you like it. What do you think?

Seeing abilities and gameplay ideas come forth is so exciting. There's so many awesome possibilities! The idea for slowing time sounds super interesting...all these ideas pop up: What if Alice eventually earns the ability to master all sorts of minor time controls? Briefly slow down, speed up, stop time? This could possibly tie into Alice's story and her stages of grief. What could the slowing, speeding up, and halting of time mean in relation to how her mind is working these issues out? Anyway! Really great art and very exciting stuff in this post!

I love all this new art! And a baby jabborwocky!? I had nevwr considered that before but I imagine it makes sense considering he was born from her guilt. I think through each level he should grow a little more until we see at the end he is an adult jabberwocky and include the poem or prohecy where she will kill him to get to the Red Queen/Queen of hearts. The toys fused together as a result if fire damage is so cool! I had never considered that and I love her new abilities! The puzzle rooms And paintings are cool perhaps Alice has to fix the painting and move it in front of the mirror so the looking glass becomes a portal? And I love your Photoshop Will Watson!!! Its so good!

I love the art done by Sonny, I love the doll art from Joey, everything looks good. I would love to see a boss that's simular to the executioner from Alice: MR. One that is invincible, which you need an extra ability to defeat. Or perhaps as it chases you, you lead it into harms way, making it run into hazardous things in the level.

Great job on that wallpaper! Looks good!
2017-12-11 15:39:00 +0000 UTC
The new concept art is excellent, I love the cute and reptilian look of the Baby Jabberwocky and the poor Mock Turtle looks more depressed than ever. Keep up the great work Sonny!
Thinking about the doll combo ideas, I am just hoping that there is not going to be too many of them in Asylum. This is because, looking at the series altogether, it would be a bit strange having plenty of doll enemies in Asylum, then only one in the original Alice, which was the nightmare spider with a doll face, then to Madness Returns which had plenty of doll enemies in it and finally to Otherlands, which had no dolls in it (even though it was short and unfortunately too brief). I had thought that the dolls in Madness Returns were there mainly because of Bumby's role within the game. Other than that, I do think it is an interesting concept and I really liked the horse doll concept, it reminds me of Catdog. The concept of exploring a maze/puzzle house, which makes you feel like you're still stuck in the same house is a great idea. It was also great to see some of Alice's new abilities and the types of puzzles she would encounter and have to solve. I also loved seeing the pocket watch return to the series, hopefully others will return too, like the flamingo croquet mallet that was a great weapon. Great job with the ideas Joey!
(I have also been working on a wallpaper for Asylum: https://imgur.com/apJQZaV it's the first this I have done in Photoshop for years, really excited about this project and I hope everything goes well. Great job everyone, keep up the good work.)

Wauw.. Where to start! Love the baby Jabberwocky. Mockturtle looks so miserable and sad, which I guess is perfect. I think he looked healthier in AMR, though.
I REALLY, really like the concept of the pocketwatch and time adjustment; the pocketwatch is at least something I remember very much, and connect with the whole Alice universe (it's very significant for the White Rabbit, and he is very significant for the Alice and the story).
The time adjustment-thing seems VEEERY fun to play around with! :D
And the dolls.. I f*cking hate dolls. They creep me out. So there absolutely perfect for this, and they're very memorable from AMR.
I'm SOOOOO incredibly excited for all of this! :D <3

I am loving the newest concept art. Good job guys
2017-12-11 12:30:04 +0000 UTC
Great idea to fuse burnt toys with each other and other things, perfectly dark and just what I was hoping for. It should get one shot in a cutscene to be explained though. I'm not too keen on seeing puzzles and minigames seemingly central to level design, I believe the game can be much richer and more immersive if story and visuals are central to gameplay, with puzzles coming after (not being removed entirely of course). At the same time I understand this might not be what you are going for, or what might be popular with a wide audience.
Stepping through paintings is a bit too Super Mario 64 but replace the paintings with mirrors and it works
2017-12-11 10:48:57 +0000 UTC
The Jabberwocky as a baby gives me the feeling that the Jabberwocky was born do to the fire and the loss of Alice's family, maybe that's an idea to consider?
2017-12-11 10:24:44 +0000 UTC
Oh my, I really love all of the concept images. I love the dollhouse in A:MR and this is just what I would have imagined the dolls to look like in Alice Asylum. And I love the Jabberwocky and mock turtle, they are also as I would imagine! They are both so cute!
2017-12-11 10:21:12 +0000 UTC
Oh man so much to take in, the first concept image of the fused dolls and toys are just perfect. I love the upside down room and all the obstacles she sketched out. Excited to see the dolls comeback, the whole doll house level and enemies were an awesome concept. The baby jabberwocky is so cute yet creepy, I like how the egg has a jade sort of look to it. As usual the mock turtle looks melancholy as ever. They both did amazing work as usual.
