Castles in the Sky

Dear Insane Children,

We're back today with another art and story update. Joey's sent along further studies of the Hatter's domain and workshop interior.

I'm a really big fan of worlds in which there are floating elements - like islands and castles in the sky. I'd like to have this feature prominently in the world design for the new Alice game. I can imagine a base domain of landscape above which there are other domains floating in the sky. Alice could travel to these by use of her umbrella (flying on updrafts).

Lots of ideas floating around my head regarding the integration of alchemy into the narrative and game play. Hoping we'll explore that topic more in future updates.

Still waiting on the first bit of art from Sonny - so I'll give him a poke to see what's up.

I'm traveling and away from Shanghai until the weekend... but do hope we can have a live stream on Sunday, 26th. Be sure to leave your comments below and we'll address those during the next stream!

Speaking of Sonny... For Black Friday we'll offer his "Mother" print for FREE with any purchase of $65 or more. After the promo the print will be removed from Mysterious and will never return. Promo runs from 11/23 at 11:30PM until 11/28 at 12:30AM. Grab your while you can!

American,

Some quick rendering of hatter's domain outside and his lab. I will start on detail if we all agree on them.

(I will add some more color to that teapot place to make it look more wonderland, maybe the floating rocks should have some pink or red trees on them among normal trees...)

Cheers,

Joey

Joey,

Apologies for being so slow to reply. I have been traveling and the Internet here is slow/dead. I will make your payment ASAP.

For the Hatter Domain... I think it's a good start. Please try to keep the Guilin island/mountain floating in the sky theme. And think about there can be rivers and waterfalls made of tea flowing over the sides of those islands.

For his workshop, I think it's really great. One idea to make sure you include: Alchemy. You can put the alchemy symbols around on various bottles and tools. This is a very important element of Hatter's story. In the game we'll use alchemy ideas a lot.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with next!

Cheers,

It looks awesome I love the warm colors inside of his workspace, gives off the feeling the past hatter location/locations in the previous games. The teapot castle looks beautiful as ever, definitly like the idea of keeping the tea flowing from the floating castle/islands. I also have always loved floating structures and worlds for some reason so I'm excited to see that continue into this game!

It looks great!! I'm so EXCITED!!! I love your ideas icekiller158.

The Hatter's domain is looking great! Instead of having just one protrusions for the mountains, there should be two to three protrusions, so that they do not just look like floating rocks with trees on top with waterfalls flowing down. We could make a few of them really wide to provide explorations to collect things that is requested by the characters in the game or traverse through them to get to Hatter's domain. The rivers could be on those islands that are wider. As for Hatter's workshop, it is looking great as well. As the story progresses and Hatter gets madder, we can have the workshop get messier and there are alchemy symbols etched in the walls and floor. I want to point out that when it come to areas, we should have Alice at least revisit them 2 to 3 times. In the previous Alice games, there were little to no revisiting. To me, it doesn't feel right as the artist work so hard to create these areas to get 1 visit and then it is forgotten. I do get that there are some cases where revisiting is not possible due to some circumstances that happens in the story, such as destruction of an area or the character defecting from the area(but may go back to retrieve something important or to kill someone). Being part of this process helped me realized how much work is put into creating a game. When I was younger I had interest in making games, which many young gamers do. I remember talking with someone that I met in an online game and then later in real life, about making a game together as she was studying computer science and programming. But unfortunately I lost contact with her at some point. I am glad to be part of this as it partially fulfill my desire to create a game, and as well as you giving this opportunity for the fans to be part of this.

The idea of floating domains is a striking visual…I can just picture a base world (like the Vale of Tears), above which clockwork castles and fortresses of cards float in the sky, and other domains lie over the waves, or down rabbit holes, or on the other side of mirrors. And a floating domain always gives the possibility to see it come crashing down to earth (would the Chesire Cat opine that “what goes up tends to come down – hard”?) during the course of the story as a result of Alice’s actions, or those of the domain’s “boss”, opening new locations, closing off old paths, showing the struggles of moving down the grief path, etc. I’d also like to say that whatever ends up happening with this project, it has been a great experience to watch the creative process in action, to see how art and ideas grow and influence each other, how excited and passionate all the fans are, and all from a far more “behind the scenes” way than usual. Come whatever may, this is a great ride, so thanks for inviting us along American!

I love this new art! Hatter looks do sad 😢 but yes I Love a lot of these suggestions specifically starting the game at the tea party as it catches fire and playing in the house and also the idea that pieces of wonderland have been broken away from the world like puzzle pieces because of Alice's psyche and being able to jump around on floating platforms with her umbrella! Lots of good stuff here 💚

I LOVE the hatters domain! The floating mountains, the Teapot, the general colours of it all, it's SO beautiful! <3 The fact, that it is so beautiful, I think will also make a big impact, when it's destroyed. It will kind of hurt, and make you (/me) sad, which I guess is good for the narrative.

The art where Hatter sits with the hat in his hands gives such a melancholic vibe. Like he was actually a very nice guy, but Alice trauma changed him, made him angry and resentful toward the world. Would love to see how he has progressed psychologically. Also, I really enjoyed 'Castle in the Sky' in Madness Returns so I'm happy to see this 'floating areas' theme return here. Maybe this time, instead of making a full-level out of these worlds, do it as a 'transportation' between the areas? In conclusion, great work, keep going! PS: Could you try doing some stream that Europeans (GMT) could watch? It's always so late here where I live and would like to participate!

Also, if would be possible to do the streamings a bit earlier? Is literally 12h difference from here and I'm never able to watch them live. Maybe 9:30 to 10?

I love castles in the sky, but I love exploring a lot more. Perhaps a land domain where you can explore and complete achievements, and the castle would be floating really high up and it could be a place for a potential boss fight? I loved the bosses from the 1st Alice. Sonny's "Mother" is breathtaking, it's a shame it will be gone forever. The lab looks fantastic and the hatter looks a bit more like i imagined. I loved Scott's idea about the tea party and I think it's a great place to start the game.

I like this idea, the unfinished tea party as a start. About floating pieces of levels, they are cool but overdoing them gives a feeling of emptiness that breaks the exploration, imo. That lab is just amazing!

Perhaps the mountains could be normal and have the floating domains anchored to them. Or even everything could be grounded pre-fire but as Alice goes mad everything literally becomes ungrounded. On last stream: I would prefer more of the budget being spent on a more immersive world and gameplay than on fancy rendered cutscenes. PS - Why yes, American, my astrolabes are in fact fully functional, and you will find no pictures of junk on my website ;P

Oh that "Mother" print is epic! I need it in my life! Consider yourself richer by $65 on black Friday ;) also I really love the creative new aspects to hattter's domain. It is going to look breath-taking when you and Joey are finished. I also can't wait to see what Sonny brings to Alice Asylum, its very exciting.

This new Hatter's domain is looking awesome! A question about these new areas that we are seeing (I asked it on the last Patreon post so sorry for the repeat, but I think it got skipped in the stream :) )- are you imagining these areas having more traditional bosses/boss fights at the end of them the way that the first game did?

I really, really, really like Joey's use of color. Everything has just been gorgeous. There's also something about the lighting, and I'm not sure why, but in the workshop piece I'm automatically thrown back to stop-motion animation. Almost like a living toy vibe? I don't know what I'm saying, but I dig it. Something that I haven't seen brought up is that Alice was at one of Hatter's tea parties the night of the fire. I've seen some people suggest playing Alice the night of the fire, I think it could be interesting. Especially if we play as Alice during the tea party gone wrong, and then when she returns at the beginning of Asylum, she returns to pick up where the party last left off, and since things are in the state of denial - something's not quite right with Hatter.
