A Lulu of an Art Print + Hatter's Back!

Dear Patrons,

As we head into November we mark the 2nd month of pre-production on Asylum and unlock the first art print for upper tier Patrons. These will be signed and shipped this week and should arrive within 20 days. They're printed on a high quality oil painting canvas and measure 48x100cm. They will make a stunning addition to your Alice collection!

I'd like to know if everyone would be OK with my adding these to the Mysterious shop for sale. I don't think these were marked as "exclusive" to Patreon, but I don't want to upset anyone's expectations. I'm thinking about pricing them at $100 as to match the level of commitment made by those who are backing here on Patreon. Thoughts?

On the business development side of things the Asylum project continues to attract new and interesting attention from potential financiers and publishers. This is excellent news for the project overall and helps us move closer to making a 3rd game. Yay!

We'll discuss all this during our next stream...

And another live stream is scheduled for November 7th @ 5:30pm PST!

Hit THIS LINK to set a reminder, and watch the stream.

Meanwhile, Joey and I continue fleshing out art while design ideas float up from the creative process we're all taking part in. Glad to have you all along!

Let me know in the comments below what you think about "young Hatter." We'll go through your comments during tomorrow's stream.

Here's the latest...

November 4th, 2017

Joey,

I think it would be good to see something from the Mad Hatter next.

In the first two games his domain was quite interesting - a lot of machines, gears, steam, etc. I think we could show his domain like the "beginning" of all that... smaller, more simple, but still lots of gears, machines, levers, ... like a factory. It would also be interesting to see him a little less mechanical. Maybe we can start to tell the story of how he became like he is in the next two games - in this game he starts more normal and then, because of the war and his experiments, he starts to become more like a machine.

What do you think?

American,

I did some linework for hatter, do not want to change him too much... or shall we make him very different? Shall he also have something burnt? Maybe his dress has smoked stain or burnt edges...He is supposed to be 'younger' and not quite crazy, I give him some thin hair (not so obvious on line drawing), and arranged his belt in a more normal way, ah, also reduced the number of the belts. He should still be a whole person, I mean nothing mechanical on his body yet. Oh, is he still going to have green skin? or shall we try a blue-pale one?

So, how do you think? I am keeping the editing quite safe.

Comments

I agree with the people from the live stream tonight that less wrinkles on hatter will get that "fresher" look across more. Keep up the good work guys!

Should the Hatter be younger since the other characters are?

I'm all for the selling of the art books, share the Alice love! The hatter looks great too :)

I wouldn't mind the art prints being sold at Mysterious, that means more money for Alice 3. Making things "exclusive" just kind of piss people off, when you decide to put the same exact items on sale later. "Exclusive" and "Limited" are really words you want to exercise extreme caution with products of your creations. For the Mad Hatter, making him younger and exploring the story of how he became who he is in the first two games is something I would like to see. Also, Lewis Carroll never used the term 'Mad Hatter', so we can tell a story on how the Hatter became mad and started to do all of these experiments with machinery. We can show the progression with his domain having very little gears, machines, and levers. Then as his madness progresses, his domain gains even more gears, machines and levers. In Alice's Adventures Under Ground, there is a chapter about the tea party, at the end of it as Alice is leaving, she turns back to look and she sees the March Hare and the Hatter trying to put the Dormouse into a teapot. Maybe we can make a story about that.

OH! And another point I forgot to mention (I'm sorry Mr. McGee, this is just me musing, you don't have to worry about reading all of this on the stream =P) That maybe it'd be interesting to play up the Hatter as he appeared in the second book (and the Hare for that matter) as messengers of the white king. Might be interesting to see the Hatter's domain as a mechanized postage office as opposed to doing the tea party ad infinitum, could also possibly be how Alice gets around and serves as a hub between the changing realms.

Joey really did a great job of making the Hatter look on model but with slight changes - as she mentions, she played it safe here, but I think since she nailed the silhouette there's not much harm in pushing the Hatter further from how he ends up by the time Alice arrives. I don't see the harm in playing with colors and proportions - perhaps playing with making his head more over-sized as in the original illustrations. In the first game, I seem to recall some busts and portraits of Hatter where he looks a bit different from his in game counterpart - it might be interesting to pull those up for reference' sake. Something else that might be interesting as a reference is the third Madness Returns teaser, I realize it was done outside of Spicy Horse and had some questionable artist direction, but I liked some of it. For example, I wanted to pull attention to the concept shown here: <a href="https://coubsecure-s.akamaihd.net/get/b7/p/coub/simple/cw_timeline_pic/067dd103ecb/b6134da07c17b29fc5f99/big_1406934832_image.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://coubsecure-s.akamaihd.net/get/b7/p/coub/simple/cw_timeline_pic/067dd103ecb/b6134da07c17b29fc5f99/big_1406934832_image.jpg</a> of things popping out of the squares on the plaid pattern on Hatter's head, like an advent calendar

Despite us talking about the cat changing and becoming who we know him to be throughout the game it hadn't occurred to me that we could see others also change. I am so excited about the possibilities for so many of the characters. The queen herself changed so much from one game to the next. I can't wait to see what it done with the others. I wonder if the fire theme will be applied to all of them, I'm so curious to see how it all fits together. I can't stress how exciting the idea of watching them all transition is to me. Also, yay at the new potential financiers and publishers, also increases my happiness levels :).

Managed to get a screen shot from my playthough! <a href="https://i.imgur.com/oxxLMwF.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://i.imgur.com/oxxLMwF.jpg</a>

That's yes from been able to purchase any art prints really, I also agree maybe a little different hatter would be good. As I remember there was a picture of him in the original game where he was more 'normal', I believe you see it just as you enter his domain. I personally found that image rather more creepy then his mecha self but I would like to see more of that version if possible.

I would very much love to purchase this art print!!! Also I do like this version of Hatter I'm glad she didn't change him too much and I like that she is thinking of lightening colors and what not! Perhpaps his limbs are burned away or he is locked in his straight jacket this time with no escape and he wants Alice to free him (which sets him on his mad path of invention)or if his body is burned the dormouse and march hare are forced to rebuild him piece by piece till he is whole again and he decides they shouls be like him

I absolutely love how much thought goes into the characters' changes. The Mad Hatter has always been one of my favourites. I also really like Joey's idea of experimenting with another skin tone. He always had this not only mechanical look but also a.. hm, poisoned, or rotten look to him. And about the art prints. This is one of the best that spawned from the projects over the last years in my opinion. I really want it and will eventually get it. I just really wonder, and I don't want to sound selfish here, if people are willing to pay $100 for a print. Of course it's fair to match the level of commitment of the high-tier patreons... but on the other hand they, or we, are mainly patreons to support the project. Not for the rewards. I'd love to hear the opinion of some more high-tier patreons. :) In the end, I'd be willing to pay $100 for an art print myself if the money from the Mysterious sales (partially) goes into the project anyway. But maybe, I don't know, $90 would look better. Hehe.

I think seeing each character become progressively more mad/insane throughout the game would be interesting. I like the the sketch very much!

HelplessHeroes

I like Joeys sketch. I agree with the Hatter being less mechanical, while still having his levels steampunk, with large gears and mechanical machines. I would really be interested in a back story where we find out what makes him mechanical.

Yep, the idea of transformation, as we discussed with Chessire, seems to be the natural way to go. The self mechanization may be a direct consecuence of the fire burning the flesh of the Hatter? About the art in the shop, as Kayleigh comments, it may help the preproduction process.

I think a completely different looking Hatter could be interesting!

I personally don't mind the art print being sold in the store, since sales will help the preproduction process. Also, I think the hatter looks fine, I wouldn't change him too much except for not having any mechanical parts yet. But maybe a paler skin tone would work.
