Back from Adventure

Dear Patrons,
I'm back from an adventure up the West Coast of the US. Yan and I drove from San Francisco to Seattle stopping at a variety of lovely towns along the way. It's always good to get away from the hustle and bustle of Shanghai in order to stimulate the creative process.
At Powell's in Portland I managed to pick up two books by CG Jung which were influential to the first two Alice games - but I'd somehow managed to lose track of - "The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious" and "Psychology and Alchemy." And I was able to meet and talk with RJ Berg about narrative, design, production, and business. Finally I had some very interesting talks with a large platform/publisher in Seattle... but can't say anything about that other than it helps us move a step closer to making "Alice: Asylum" a reality. Exciting stuff!
While I was away Joey sent along some new images and I've replied to her in the message below.
As always, we'd love to hear your feedback and ideas.
We'll host another live stream on YouTube later this week. Be sure to join us!

Joey,
This new version of the Cat is great. I think this gets very close to what the fans had in mind when they talked about putting some fur on him.
For the Bargaining stage... I am still uncertain about where this will take place. I've been thinking about it daily and reading the feedback from fans but nothing really sticks just yet. It does seem the area should be one which clearly represents the pain and suffering taking place within Alice's mind. It's this pain she's willing to bargain in order to be rid of. So we could imagine an area of Wonderland being punished/injured en masse by some force of nature or other widespread damaging effects.
Imagine a place in Wonderland where it never stops raining - and the characters melt if they get wet.
Or a place where the sun no longer shines - and all the (talking) plants are dying slowly from lack of sunlight.
These sorts of events could represent the pain Alice is suffering - and her mission to restore things to normal is an analog to her bargaining her way out of that pain. Ultimately, whatever the mission, it must fail. I'll think about an area where this would make sense - and I'll discuss with the fans. Then get back to you.
Cheers,
-a

So... Zenimax (blink, blink) is interested on an online Alice... Well, if they're ready to do it the Doom way, an external team who does it 100%, i don't see why not. But, and this is a very big but, if the team has to split time and resources, then, is a total nono for me.

I loved the weapons. Slinyshot looks fun and lollipop reminds me of the hobby horse - which was my favorite weapon on AMR.

The design of Cheshire Cat is good, but some things are bothering me a bit. On the Ash version, he is missing whiskers and some tattoos on the forearm. Also Ash looks like he is entirely hairless except for the tip of his tail, which is kind of inconsistent with the mature iteration of Cheshire Cat in the two sequels. In the sequels, he has fur on his head and paws. Also the tattoos should be consistent as well, the tattoo on the young Cheshire Cat should be mirrored. If you look at the older Cheshire Cat in the other games, you will see that the right arm also has a swirl tattoo right under the stalactites-like part, the younger Cheshire Cat should have that.
The weapons looks good. You might want to be careful with the pipe weapon, as it looks like you are promoting underage smoking. You know those bitchy parents who wants to ban things because of that. So you might want to consider changing it up a bit. I am personally fine with it, but I just want to point that out.

I think this is my favorite illustration so far! Excellent job!

Yes, this was my idea with the fiery/ash cat. So to my understanding the furry design shouldn't have the tattoos yet, to make this work. Maybe he will comment on that in the next stream.

Totally agree. Vorpal blade as an end game, uber powerfull weapon suits the timeline. About the sunless place, the forest of "fungiferus flora", on the first Alice may be an option think about. Some autum palette with red and brown, and decaying floral life... The artwork is spot on once more, good job!

I love the Chesire designs! I feel like the furry tail could be a little bit more interesting, so it pops out more, compared to the after-fire version.
Weapons seem quite fun, but vorpal blade is something that stands out from the 'toys' - it is definitely more 'dangerous' and 'okay, joke's over'. So maybe let Alice start with the toys and make her 'earn' the knife, so to speak. Her not having a knife from the beginning could symbolise the helplessness she feels.

I like it too (eventhough I so don't care about the Hatter).

I like Madaleine Fitzmaurice idea, sounds interesting!

I adore these designs for the Cheshire Cat. I cannot wait to see how he changes from his furred design to his ember look. Are the tattoos going to be on his fur? I thought there could be a deeper meaning behind them, that they might be branded onto him after the fire.

Perhaps bargaining can be the Mad Hatter and Hatter’s Domain? In AMA, we see him experimenting on the residents of Wonderland and turning them into mechanical automatons. Maybe Alice 3 could be the beginning of his obsession with his experiments? Maybe he could offer to make Alice mechanical like him so she doesn’t have to feel pain anymore? Hatter could also ask her to join him in his experiments and descend into madness together.
Loving the progress on the Cheshire Cat and the weapons! Keep up the awesome work!

Love the new ideas for the Cheshire cat! One of my favorite weapons from the alice games was the shhoting cards. It would be cool to see some flaming shooting cards in this game, the nostalgia would be real!!

I really like the new, furry Cheshire cat! There's still a danger of losing the silhouette that we know. It kind of disappears in the fur a little in the chest/stomach area, so tuck that in a bit, and I'll say he's perfect!
Like the idea of the lollipop. It seems fitting for a younger and a wee bit more innocent Alice. In general, that the weapons are treasured toys she might have had before the fire.
I REALLY like the idea of a place where there is no sun, and the plants slowly die. I think it has potential to make a very big impression, since it's easily in a very stark contrast to the singing flowers from the books and Disneys 1951 cartoon (I seem to remember you mentioning in a previous livestream, that you really liked them, and so do I).
I'm trying to keep this short, but just one more thing; I too find it difficult to figure out how to make an area that says "bargaining", without being basically a market place.
Maybe there could be like heads hanging from trees or creatures stuck in walls, shouting bargains at Alice, as she passes by (like you hear the Queens voice can be heard in Madness Returns), like "please bring my family back, and I'll never drink again" or something like that.

I love these Cheshire ideas, he looks great in both and I think the fur/no fur change really works. I'm also excited for the lollipop, the hobby horse was fantastic and so much fun to use, I'm looking forward to something similar with the lollipop

Does furry Cheshire Cat need to be ash grey? I'm asking because, this way, he looks closer to an after fire cat than the still burning wood black skinny one. (If furry Cheshire Cat is pre-fire cat, I think his eyes should be less fiery too.)
Make Nine Inch Nails great again

Please make the lollipop as satisfying to hit things with as the hobby horse, it was good after a stressful day haha.

This new version of the Cheshire Cat is perfect! He maintains his look but with the cuteness of a normal kitten and the 2nd version is awesome ☺

The fluffy cheshire cat looks great, Joey did a great job at maintaining his iconic silhouette! This also opens up the possibility of showing more wonderland characters in their pre-fire forms.
2017-10-31 06:18:31 +0000 UTC
Wow Joey did an awesome job still making him look like himself with the fur. I really do like the burned Cheshire he looks awesome, tiny but sinister haha. Bottom artwork looks beautiful love the flaming halls. Happy to see the flaming jacking the box for wide/long range attacks range attacks. I see it being used for an audio attack in this that said which could be interesting for a stun move or blowing up heads I suppose. I can imagine the heads exploding or even literally blowing up like a balloon and floating away in a more childish brain. Also, oh God's the giant lollipop is magnificent. Can't wait to utilize some of these should they make the cut.

I love all this new art!!! I'm excited about how cute the cat looks and the new weapons!! I think if we go to the night of the fire I would love a level if the game to start the story of Alice trying to escape the fire and Dinah leading her to a safe opening!!! And maybe before we see her dream of wonderland and the characters screaming "Fire!! Alice wake up!!" Which means more pre fire wonderland characters?
2017-10-31 03:38:12 +0000 UTC
Love the new furred Cheshire Cat.
Also, I think the game should start the night of the fire, with her in pre-fire Wonderland and then waking up to the house being on fire. This is vaguely referenced at the beginning of the first game, with the voices of various characters telling her she needs to wake up, and I think plays a part in her issues with dealing with the fire. Plus, it gives a baseline for us to see all the changes Wonderland goes through as she goes through the stages.
2017-10-31 03:32:29 +0000 UTC
The Chesire Cat is looking good! Definitely like how he goes from “cute” to something more twisted as a result of the fire. The weapon concepts have a “childish” aspect that fits with a young Alice.
I also had some ideas to share as suggestions and inspiration; hopefully they aren’t too lengthy!
For “depression” the pool of tears from the first book could be an obvious setting, but maybe with oversized chains that could be cutting into Wonderland, dragging it down into a dark and stormy sea of tears and depression.
Perhaps the story could involve reassembling the pieces of a shattered Looking Glass (as a representation of Alice’s damaged sanity?) that when complete will allow Alice to see both that she is alone (contrasting the family portrait from “A:MR”) and to see herself for who she is? Perhaps this would work as (an admittedly blunt) visual representation of “acceptance”: understanding of her and her situation that gives Alice the strength to conquer the events of the first game?
Maybe throughout the game she might see her family reflected in the characters of Wonderland, or as prisoners of it that she needs to “free”?

The Cheshire Cat looks better than ever! I love the contrast between the before and after, and I think the fluffy version is perfect for the Wonderland of before the fire.
My favorite weapon so far is the pipe! :D It looks amazing!
Awesome work!
2017-10-31 00:21:16 +0000 UTC
Could be cool to have the pipe also blow bubbles that can capture the enemy. Anybody ever been to a hookah bar where hipsters are blowing smoke bubbles? That'd be an interesting thing to see/play with. I love all this art, though. Feels like Alice.

The furry Cheshire Cat is so cuuuute!! I wanna snuggle him *w* Thank you for mentioning those two books! If they were influential to the Alice games I’d definitely check them out *w*
