And just to add as to why people hold him as the "heart and soul" of cinema I think it has to do with his love for cinema... he is an encyclopedia of film and knows everything about it... he's definitely made mediocre and even bad films... but we know what he is capable of so we always anticipate his releases... I mean, also David Lynch has made some mediocre stuff in the middle of some of the best films ever made... that doesn't make him overrated though... anyways, ... just my opinion, but I can totally see why he is seen as the "heart and soul" of cinema ... that's still alive that is.

2024-01-16 20:11:56 +0000 UTCI do NOT think Scorsese is overrated... but he has made some mediocre and some bad films... not just lately, but throughout his career... he doesn't put out masterpiece after masterpiece like a Kubrick used to do... but he does come out with great films even after giving us a bad one on his previous effort.

2024-01-16 08:26:25 +0000 UTCI agree with everything that you said, except with him being overrated ... because no one really considers him a good director or writer or anything... yeah, Dawn of the dead was good and 300 was fun... but yeah, I think most people regard him as mediocre at best.... amongst his fans ok, but does he have that many?

2024-01-16 08:24:09 +0000 UTCOmg, Definitely Wes Anderson... loved bottle rocket, rushmore and royals... I did not care for life aquatic and anything after that... his style grew old on me and I just don't find it charming anymore... but have to admit I stopped watching his films after a certain point so I might just be hatin' ... definitely will watch "Asteroid City" at some point

2024-01-16 08:21:50 +0000 UTCDefinitely... he was once a one of the greatest sci fi action directors... and the he did Titanic and it all went down from there... pun intended. I mean... freaking like 5 Avatars? Really? What a waste...

2024-01-16 08:18:35 +0000 UTCI agree on Taika Waititi being overrated... 100% ... Although I am intrigued about him allegedly making the film "El Incal" one of Alejandro Jodorowsky's masterworks in graphic novels... I do think he's talented and has potential... so hopefully that happens, but I have been soooo disappointed with promises of Jodorowsky stuff being made like "The sons of el Topo" that just never happened ... amongst other well known cases... I hope "El Incal" happens though... could be better than dune.

2024-01-16 08:15:46 +0000 UTCI used to looooove PTA, at least at the time when Boogie Nights came out and Magnolia ... they were really great for the time and for a young director so I was excited to see what he would do next, punch drunk love was a bit of a let down at first but have grown to love it... There Will Be Blood is his masterpiece and I think that someone that has made a film like that will always have the potential to do it again... although I have to say I feel his later stuff to be somewhat more boring but still visually and technically impressive with great performances ... but I seem to just not be as interested in his stories anymore... but I'm grateful we still have him out there making films... we need him.

2024-01-16 08:05:36 +0000 UTCI enjoy some of the content of his movies, which is more than I can say for some franchises out there, but his movies are so excruciatingly specific in style and tone that to me it feels like at no point am I allowed to forget that not only am I just watching a movie, but a Wes Anderson movie. I prefer movies that I have a chance of losing myself in.

2024-01-07 02:36:24 +0000 UTCGlad to hear I’m not the only one who fails to connect at ALL with basically anything from Wes Anderson. Impersonal is a great way to describe my impression of his movies.

2024-01-04 01:42:28 +0000 UTCGreta Gerwig, to me, is very overrated. She’s basically the female equivalent of Noah Baumbach (whom she was his protégé). I’d rather stick with the original myself instead of the knockoff. Don’t let her recent success with Barbie fool you. It’s just an exaggerated version of her schtick.

2024-01-03 18:58:15 +0000 UTCI go for PTA. I like some of his movies, There Will Be Blood and The Master beeing my favorite. I do think he's a very accomplished director, but his movies usually don't strike me as much as people praise them. Punch Drunk Love, for instance, was to akward for me, and I actually like cringy Lanthimos-esk movies once in a while. Boogie Nights on the other hand, with it's Scorsese type of style wasn't quiet there. I thought the third act wasn't written all that great and really dragged on.

2024-01-03 09:14:31 +0000 UTCThe Daniels. Their juxtaposition of absurd humor and sentimentality just doesn’t work for me. Also, in an interview for Swiss Army Man they stated that over the top classical music playing over a scene of a farting corpse flying in the air is inherently funny. That explains perfectly why I don’t care for their style at all.

2024-01-03 00:35:04 +0000 UTCAri Aster. He’s great when it comes to creating moments of horror and bringing out the best performances from his actors. But his films are often too drawn out and it often overreaches the watermark of tension. I don’t think he’s a bad Director by any means, I just feel like none of his films have felt like the final draft so far.

2024-01-02 23:21:00 +0000 UTCWhat changed was a lot of the elders became persona non grata (Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, etc.), many of the Gen X directors haven’t lived up to their early work, and there have been barely any millennial filmmakers shaking up the industry.

2024-01-02 22:26:46 +0000 UTCTaika Waititi… which pains me to say since What We Do In The Shadows is my favorite horror comedy. It’s also the last time a new comedy has come out and felt like an instant classic. All of his other films since have just been either cute/cloying or Marvel assignment work. I still think he’ll be around as a reliable character actor and producer, but the fact that his last two films bombed seems to be foreshadowing the end of his status as an auteur.

2024-01-02 22:24:22 +0000 UTCJames Cameron. I love the man to death but he hasn't had it since Terminator 2. He used to make the most intelligent and mature action films like Terminator, Aliens, and of course Terminator 2 in a genre usually known for being dumb with mindless shootouts, explosions, and cardboard boxes for characters. Titanic, while I love most of it, is when he started to show cracks with more generic storytelling and characters and Avatar was...yeah. Despite the negative following it's gotten, the sequel The Way of Water somehow made almost as much as the first one. His films from the 80s and early 90s weren't like the most deep or complex but they were masterfully executed with real stakes and more fleshed out characters that you rooted for and now he's just caricaturing himself and making more money than any director ever.

2024-01-02 18:15:29 +0000 UTCI have two that come to mind. Wes Anderson has an iconic style that has entered the lexicon of filmmaking, but I don’t know if he’s made a movie worth watching more than 25% of the time. Grand Budapest Hotel might have been his peak. I saw French Dispatch and Asteroid City and thought if this guy hadn’t attracted a serial desire for A-list cameos, no one would care about any of his movies. They’re oddly impersonal and even weirder the ones that feel more personal are the ones no one likes (Darjeeling Limited). Jordan Peele is also overrated. Get Out was fantastic but Us and Nope were big misses. Us I think might be a legitimately bad movie whereas Nope has something good in there but wasn’t executed well. It’s almost like he had 10 years to write his first movie and maybe 18 months for the other two.

2024-01-02 14:40:27 +0000 UTCI want to echo this one. Within my lifetime I feel like people rebranded Scorsese as the heart and soul of cinema when around The Aviator he was just one of many directors. I like The Departed as much as everyone else, but I’m not really seeing what happened in his late career that made everyone decide he was the GOAT. Especially because I found The Irishman to be kind of bad and while Killers of the Flower Moon is better — it didn’t really justify the hyperbole around the guy.

2024-01-02 14:32:40 +0000 UTCZack Snyder, the bloke made one good film (Dawn of the Dead) and a portion of that quality comes from James Gunn's script. He made 2 ok films (300 & Watchmen) and the rest of his output has been either mediocre or worse. Don't know why he has so many fans or gets the praise that he does.

2024-01-02 12:49:07 +0000 UTCI hate to say this because I regard him as one of the best of all time, but I think Scorsese has been overpraised lately, despite being overlooked and underappreciated for a few decades. He's a bold and inventive film maker, but neither consistent nor particularly innovative in his later years. He rightly deserves his place in the pantheon of great directors, but among, not above others of his generation.
