The Winner Is...
Added 2023-03-08 06:39:22 +0000 UTCSo it seems that through both polls, the consensus is An American in Paris, which is one of my personal favorite movies, but one I rarely ever get to talk about. Much like my recent reaction to Chazelle's Babylon, AAIP is a film that gives me chills, makes me cringe, lifts my heart, deeply frustrates me...it's a mix of complicated emotions. And yet...I'll never stop watching it. Ultimately, I see it as quite a melancholy film about lost artists who have no idea what they want to do with their lives. So they delay the inevitable by living in a fantasy of sorts, that has its mix of beauty and malaise.
It also just has all of my favorite people coming together, doing my favorite types of things. I mean, set to Gershwin music, Gene Kelly stars, Minelli directs, Levant gets his solo Gershwin moment again, the spectacular ballet sequence, the french painting aesthetic...it's just a win all around in the talent department. The kind of talent showcased in a way that you just don't see anymore, and haven't for many decades.
So I'm excited about it. I wanted to try and set a date for it. Was thinking March 19th in the evening time, which is a Sunday. Official date and time tba, but thought I would just get that out there so you guys can be thinking about it.

Cool. Have you considered discord ? They are set up for watch parties. Or u can send a link to a private you tube stream on your Patreon and do it that way. Not sure if u can stream the movie in you tube through, even if it's private..

2023-03-11 21:29:22 +0000 UTCIn this case, it is kinda personal but I don't outright hate it. I've acknowledged that there are great things about it. I'm just not used to being disappointed when a filmmaker I adore comes out with something new that is beneath his potential since Chazelle is one of the only directors today I hold in such high regard. I apologize for going overboard with it. There's a reason why I try not to watch or think about bad films, especially from talented people I love, because they usually put me in a sour mood. If it bothers you or anyone else on here, I won't bring it up again.

2023-03-10 19:53:32 +0000 UTCWe get that you don't like it. There's a bitterness towards things you have, that I feel is often more on a personal level, than critical.

2023-03-08 14:00:36 +0000 UTCIt does have issues but I have no problem calling it a good film which is more than I can say for Babylon. I won't know my work schedule for that weekend until next week so we'll see.
