“I beat the shit out of some kids today. But it was for a purpose. Made me feel good about myself. It was like I did something constructive with my life. Like I accomplished something.” “You need many years of therapy. Many, many, many…fucking years of therapy.”

Bad Santa (2003) A hilarious black comedy about a sleazy mall Santa who robs the malls he works for every year with his dwarf assistant. Great performances all around from Thornton, Cox, Kelly (Thurman Merman), Ritter, and especially Bernie Mac. God I miss him.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop. I haven't seen it, but if the memes are anything to go by it must be hilarious...

Jingle All the Way isn’t perfect, but I love that the mall scenes show how consumerism has totally corrupted the spirit of the holidays. In that sense, it’s the most authentic American Christmas movie. Also, the scene where Arnold fights an army of Mall Santas is pure cinematic excellence.

”Career Opportunities”. its one of John Hughes most underated films. its very diffrent from his other films and a precursor to “Home Alone”. Jennifer Connelly is always beautful, she really glows here. I envy Frank Whaley‘s character every time i see the eletric horse scene.

Mallrats. I recognize that it’s not exactly a cinematic masterpiece, but it did introduce me to the comedic sensibility of Kevin Smith, which is perfect to experience when you’re 10 or 11 years old. Besides, I think it really captures the appeal of the mall in the time before Amazon shopping, the awesomeness of having everything you could ever want under one building. If you’re hungry, you go to the food court. If you want to play games, you go to the arcade. The two main guys who hang out there all day made it look like the coolest, most fun thing to do with your time. And with all your friends hanging around to do stupid shit, you’d never want to leave. Mallrats, in its crude, cartoonish way, understood all that. And yeah, it’s still pretty funny. You’ll never look at a man eating a melted chocolate pretzel the same way again.

Yeah. Not much of a contest there. I'll never forget the image of the zombie in the fountain with the coins.

Smooth Talk! Starring Laura Dern, when I think of teenagers in the 80s, John Hughes movies come to mind first, they paint a pretty wholesome picture of high school age teens of the decade, Smooth Talk starts out feeling that way but slowly unravels in to a much creepier and probably more realistic story of teen girls exploring their sexuality. What I really like about this movie is that it does not romanticize older men seducing teenage girls, instead it really puts in to perspective how uncomfortable and terrifying it actually is. Sadly this perspective is rarely shown in media, where the picture is usually painted of young girls “wanting” it. A good portion of the movie takes place in a mall, and we see just how immature and naïve these young girls are which really sets a good tone for the audience to start feeling so uneasy once we see Laura Dern start getting preyed on by an older man.

And there's just something so fun about watching people live your fantasy of just dicking around an empty mall.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure has that extended mall sequence so I think it counts. There's something just so funny about plopping figures from throughout history and slapping them in the fluroscent neon of an 80s mall. It's the ultimate fish out of water gag and it never fails to get chuckles out of me.

Dawn of the Dead (1978). It shifts the focus of the original movie from racial commentary to American capitalist satire. The idea that reanimated corpses need to be in places that gave their life meaning, and so they all flock to a mall, is deeply funny. But I love that the movie isn’t too self aware about it, either. It plays its characters and situations pretty straight, and has really fun action/horror set pieces to go with it.
