Stepping much further back in time from the '70s to 1940, here's a panel from a Big Red McLane story by Fletcher Hanks. This is just such a no-frills panel. All you need to know is that Big Red is punching the crap out of a guy, and that's what you get. No fuss, no muss, beyond the unique, quirky style intrinsic to Hanks's work.
I admit, I'm not sure if I'd be quite as enamored with this panel if the dialogue were absent, but the perfect synthesis between the dialogue, imagery, color palette, lettering style...it all blends into a killer little panel (and this panel IS little--maybe 1.5" square on the page).
