Dark Woods - Sebun devour
Added 2020-10-16 14:09:28 +0000 UTCThis was another Devour that I struggled with until I found its 'peaceful' vibe. When the trees were literal carnivores, I didn't like the "about to get gang-mauled" feeling the piece had. It was too literal and too upsetting for the tone I try to achieve with these works.
The moment trees as a metaphor drifted into my thoughts, something clicked. I liked how the imagery of feeling lost in a dark forest is something well suited to Sebun's suicidal mindset.
Added bonus, the Wood of Suicides is a canto in Dante's Inferno, so nice little connection there too~
(I started comic drafting right as I went to finish this piece so frequent postings got a little held up. Getting back on track now~ The next Devour may not be so 'peaceful' but I always aim for pleasing~)

2020-11-01 20:55:03 +0000 UTCI love that! Originally I tried to get this in for Sept cause it was like the dark side to growing up... dreams get compared next to reality and no matter the effort, the difference can be shattering... but it's still a good fit for spooky Oct too~

The woods, something ancient and unchangeable, is a pretty nice metaphor to the supposedly unchanging discrimination of women in the workplace that Sebun struggles with so much, and that seems to "devour" her mentally. Maybe my interpretation is a little far fetched, but I love this piece and with the ceiling and her dress it comes to my mind, that this "role" of the damsel in distress that is forced upon her because she is a female and an herbivore.
