Ch: 9 [Luna]

The atmosphere at the training facility was charged with anticipation as the students who had failed their hero exams gathered in the designated area. It was a diverse group, each with their unique quirks and abilities, and the uncertainty of the situation hung in the air.

Irine, Jackson, and Rachel stood in line, their expressions a mix of excitement and nervousness. They were among the students who had chosen to seize this unexpected opportunity to prove themselves and secure a spot in the hero program.

As the minutes ticked away, a group of instructors and pro heroes arrived, taking their positions at the front of the gathering. The head instructor, a stern-looking man with a scar across his cheek, stepped forward and addressed the assembled students.

[Head instructor: SwampMan] [Age: 38]

[Quirk: Slowdown> Everything around him slows down as if they are stuck in a swamp]

"Listen up, everyone," he began, his voice carrying the weight of authority. "You're here today because you've been given a second chance. You've failed your hero exams, but that doesn't mean your journey ends here. This orientation will test your abilities, and your willingness to push past your limits."

He paused for a moment, letting his words sink in. "You will face a series of challenges that will push you to the brink. Some of you may fail, but that's the reality of the hero world. It's not for the faint of heart. But those who persevere, those who rise above their limitations, will have a chance to join the hero program."

Irine, Jackson, and Rachel exchanged determined glances, a silent agreement passing between them. They were ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, no matter how difficult.

The head instructor continued, "Your first test begins now. You will be divided into teams of three, and each team will be assigned a specific task. The catch is that you won't know what your task is until you arrive at the designated location. Adaptability is a crucial trait for heroes, and this test will evaluate your ability to think on your feet and work together as a team."

As the instructor continued...

Feeling the weight of exhaustion settling into his bones, Travis discreetly slipped away from the crowded gathering and made his way towards a quieter spot on the campus. He needed some rest, even if it was just a short nap, to soothe his burning eyes and recharge his energy.

The college campus was vast, and finding a secluded place wasn't a challenge. Travis made his way to the roof of one of the smaller buildings, away from the prying eyes of the students who were eagerly awaiting their assignments.

As he settled down on the rooftop, he couldn't help but appreciate the tranquility of the moment. The sun was high in the sky, casting a warm, golden glow over the campus. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of nearby trees, creating a soothing symphony of nature's sounds.

Travis settled under the shade of the water tank and closed his eyes, hoping to catch a few moments of much-needed rest.

"Am I pushing myself too much?" He mumbled.

He had been working nonstop for as long as he could remember and after that weird dream, he wasn't able to get a good night's sleep. For some reason, he worked too hard, trying to drown himself in work to keep his mind away from his past memories.

The gentle rustling of leaves and the distant hum of activity from the college campus provided a comforting backdrop as Travis allowed himself to drift into a light slumber. His mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and memories, but the fatigue of recent days gradually pulled him into a deeper state of relaxation.

In his dreams, he found himself back in that barren landscape from his nightmare, but this time, the atmosphere was different. The sky above had a blue tint among the dark clouds, and the air was filled with a sense of calm. There was no looming dread, no unseen force holding him back.

He stood there, his feet unburdened by the weight of concrete, and watched as the mysterious girl with purple irises approached him. Her gaze held a warmth that he had not seen before, and her lips moved, as if she were speaking to him.

"Are you going to play hide and seek again, big brother?" She said with a warm smile.

He blinked in surprise, the familiarity of her words echoing in his mind. The girl's smile was so different from the haunting visage he had encountered in his previous dreams. It was a genuine, affectionate smile that tugged at his heartstrings.

"Hide and seek?" Travis repeated, his voice filled with confusion. "I... I don't understand."

The girl's laughter tinkled like wind chimes, and she extended her hand towards him. "Come on, big brother. Let's play together."

He hesitated for a moment, his mind filled with uncertainty. But there was something about the girl's presence, something that felt oddly comforting and familiar. He took her hand, and as their fingers intertwined, a sense of warmth and belonging washed over him.

The barren landscape around them began to shift and transform. The crimson and black sky gave way to a brilliant blue, and the desolation gave way to a vibrant, lush garden. He remembers this place.

The garden behind his house...

The garden was a sanctuary for Travis during his tumultuous childhood. It was a place of solace, a refuge where he could escape the complexities of his family and his father's relentless training. He could almost feel the soft grass under his feet and the gentle breeze against his skin, just as he did in his younger years.

"I remember this place," Travis whispered, a mix of nostalgia and wonder filling his voice. "This is the garden behind our house."

"Luna, what are you doing here with that useless trash?" A woman in her mid-30s walked toward us yelling at the girl, her words dripping with venom. "Go inside to your room and take a rest. Your art teacher will come in 4 hours. 2 hours rest and 2 hours practice. Get on it."

The sudden intrusion of the woman's harsh voice shattered the tranquil atmosphere of the garden, causing Travis to release Luna's hand and take a step back. His memories rushed back, and he realized who the woman was – his stepmother.

[Name: Gizzle Taylor] [Age: 34]

[Quirk: Art World> Absorbs a single target into her painting world for a limited amount of time.]

"But I want to play," Luna tried to talk back, but a glare from her mother was enough to break her cheerful spirit.

"Don't make me repeat again," Gizzle spat, "Besides, your father has given up on this trash. Soon we will have one less mouth to feed." She walked away.

Travis watched as his stepmother's figure disappeared into the distance, leaving behind a lingering sense of bitterness and resentment. It was a painful reminder of the harsh reality he had faced as a child, a reality where he was deemed "useless trash" by those who should have cared for him.

Luna, his younger sister, looked up at him with teary eyes, her cheerful demeanor overshadowed by the weight of their family's disapproval. Travis felt a surge of protectiveness welling up within him, a determination to shield Luna from the cruelty of their household.

"Don't cry, Luna," he said, his voice filled with resolve. "You must become strong, you understand?"

She nodded her head, wiping her tears on her sleeves.

"Become so strong that no one can tell you what to do, okay?" He continued, his words laced with an unwavering conviction. "Become so strong that you can live life on your own terms."

His sister looked up at him, her eyes filled with admiration. "I will, big brother!"

"Endure this pain for now and reach the top," He gently ruffled her hair, a gesture of affection and support. "Then, we will be able to play as much as we want. Right now, I am too weak..."

A feeling of sadness swelled in his chest as he gazed upon the innocence and strength in Luna's eyes. It was a bittersweet moment, knowing that he would soon be separated from the only person who had shown him true compassion and acceptance.

.

Travis opened his eyes. He touched his cheeks...

Why was there something wet trickling from the corner of his eyes?

It had been a long time since he had felt so deeply connected to the events and memories from his past. It was as if he had been transported back in time, reliving that bittersweet moment with his younger sister, Luna.

Her words echoed in his mind.

"I will! I will do my best, big brother!"

Her radiant smile pierced through the darkness that enshrouded his memories and lifted the veil of sorrow he had carried ever since his parents separated.

"FUCK!" He punched the wall in frustration, "Why the hell am I remembering all these memories?" He wondered. It's been years since he has buried his old memories deep in the crevasses of his mind, as he kept chasing his goals.

Chasing what goals exactly? What exactly is my purpose in this world? He couldn't answer this question as his mind had once again clouded by doubt and regret.

"Shit..." He let out a sigh. "So, it's her... No wonder she felt so familiar..."
