Update 7/21/2019
Added 2019-07-21 19:33:51 +0000 UTC*dry cough* help me....
We took the laptop to a second place (and they were a real pain to deal with) and their assessment iiiss... they won't fix it. cool.
We're trying one more place, and after that we either pay the troll toll or go with a new deal.
The laptop is here for the moment, and between backing up files and reinstalling windows, I finished sculpting Katie's dick veins. I don't have a great vision of how they look in render because this laptop is making it almost impossible to even render, so we'll see.
This isn't really related but this laptop is so slow that it literally freezes whenever I start typing anything. so I'm just guessing how this text comes out until 15 seconds later. Nightmare.
This is like 127 Hours Later. Except I just can't work on girls with dicks. I'm stuck in a chasm with no creative outlet!
And my arm, hopefully, will remain in it's place when it's over.

A good read! Thank you for the advice. The main issue is that my situation is temporary as is this laptop, and the laptop isn't mine to begin with, it's my girlfriend's - and the decision of what to do is heavily in her favour, since she's the one who's gonna be stuck with whatever decision we go with after I leave the country. I suppose I haven't clarified my situation entirely to everyone, but in early September I will be back on my mighty desktop at home (we're in a 4000+ mile long distance relationship) and this situation will no longer be an issue. But since I would REALLY rather not spend the next 5-6 additional weeks doing absolutely nothing, we're trying to figure out something for now. So, it's a real pickle. I will take your advice on not treating this machine like a desktop, though. I didn't really consider that. I think I will be at most rendering still shots for the time being, so this machine won't be so stressed out (as opposed to long animations).

2019-07-22 15:34:38 +0000 UTCRepairing laptops, especially with motherboard problems, is awkward since problems are usually a result of being dropped or overheated, two causes that are much rarer in desktops (it's usually a bad harddrive in desktops). The problems created by this tend to be difficult to trace and fix. Even once they're "fixed" they often continue developing problems as the microfractures from the drop continue to spread (like a crack in a car windshield) or the heat damage continues to progress when the laptop is returned to use with inadequate cooling. This is especially the case when a laptop is left to render all night regularly, they're simply not designed for that kind of duty cycle. Personally, if the laptop still works I would leave it as it is and build a desktop rather than spend several hundred dollars possibly repairing a laptop considering the very real chance that you're throwing good money after bad. You get a lot more bang for your buck out of a desktop for rendering power as well. For about 1k you can make a very solid desktop, if you decide to go that route send me a message and I'll spec out a build for you.

2019-07-22 12:32:43 +0000 UTCFor the price of repair.. can't you purchase another machine? Simply swap (or migrate) the old machine's harddrive onto the new machine, and presto-chango... quote-unquote.. fixed.
