A few days had passed since I met that strange girl and I went back to my daily routine. The only difference was that my body felt much better. Though I don’t think that I was the only one that noticed it.
“Illya, are you sure that you’re alright?” Auntie Sara asked, diligently looking at me, while I was eating the strawberry shortcake that she gave me.
“I’m fine! I feel great!” I happily said, eating more cake. These past few days have been great. I've never felt better since that girl removed the potion from my body.
“Are you sure?” Auntie Sara look concerned as she talk almost as if something wasn’t right.
“Auntie?” I was confused. Was there something wrong?
“Excuse me Miss, but the guest that you have requested for has arrived,” a black hair maid said, walking over to us.
“Wonderful, please bring them here,” Auntie Sara said, with a smile on her face, though to me it looked forced. “Illya, Auntie has a special guest coming to meet you. Please be nice and do not cause any trouble while they're here.”
“Okay!” I didn’t know quite what was going on, but there was no way that she would invite someone dangerous over. It was probably one of her friends. Thinking that I wasn’t involved I continued to eat my cake, without caring to pay attention to my surroundings.
“My, my, it looks like someone is a big eater,” a gentle male voice said causing me to look up with frosting still on my face. Standing over me was a man with long blonde hair, wearing a white and gold rob. His expression was very gentle causing me not to fear him in the slightest.
“I do assume that this is the young lady that you were talking to me about before in your letter,” the man said looking at me.
“Yes she is,” Auntie Sara said back to him. “Illya, do you remember that bracelet that I tried to give you a few days ago? The one that you said made you feel heavy?”
“Yes?” Why was she asking me about that right now? Don't tell me that she was trying to get me to wear it again. My body was finally feeling better, and I didn’t want to feel weak like I did before.
“This nice man is a priest, he’s going to help us figure out why the bracelet made you feel that way,” Auntie Sara said, holding my hands. “Can you be a brave girl for me and let him hold your hands?”
“Do… do I have to?” I asked her, feeling a bit uncomfortable with this. The girl the other day was one thing, but the smile on this priest's started to feel unnatural the more that I looked at it.
“Don’t worry sweetie, I promise that nothing bad will happen. You’re perfectly safe.” I could tell that Auntie Sara wouldn’t lie to me, but still, something was really giving me bad vibes about this priest.
“A-alright,” I said, holding out my hands for the priest to hold. “Ugh.” His hands felt cold and slimy to the touch, making me feel more uncomfortable. A small light started to emanate from his hands and I could feel something strange moving around my body. Luckily this feeling disappeared after he let go of my hands.
“Hmm, it’s just as I feared,” the priest said to my aunt. “The problem is her mana.”
“What’s wrong with her mana?” Auntie Sara asked, sounding concerned as she knelt down next to me.
“Her mana levels are extremely low, so much so that it is dangerous for her.” The priest was right. I don’t know what he did, but he was able to figure out what I had been hiding from my family. But why did it feel disgusting when he did it? The other day when the girl with the horns found out so had low mana levels I didn’t feel anything like what I did just now.
“As you know, mana is a core aspect of every living thing in this world, regardless if one uses magic or not. If one’s mana level starts to di beyond a certain point it can endanger their health. Despite being what looks like a part high elf, your niece has mana levels lower than a goblin. Frankly, it’s hard to imagine how she has lived this long. Lucky from what I could tell her levels are slowly increasing.”
“Does this mean that she’ll live? Does this mean that she’s not in any danger?” Auntie Sara asked, her hands trembling.
“I can’t say for certain. There has never been a case like hers before. If there was it was either never reported or they died before it could be found out.”
“Is there anything that we can do to help her?” Auntie Sara had the right to be concerned. I thought about what Lilith told me for three years and wore not only the necklace and potion for that same time period but nothing. My mana levels never did increase and according to the girl I was about to die.
“For one, keep her away from magically charged objects. They can harm her and deteriorate her health. So the bracelet that you tried to give her before defiantly has to stay away from her. There is always the option of sending her to the church. We have many members that would love to help her. I promise that she will be well protected there.”
“No, I don’t want to leave!” I didn’t know why he suggested that I go to the church, but it was obvious that I didn’t want to go. I couldn’t trust someone that looked at me like… like an object of study.
“Yes, she is correct I don’t believe that she will be going anywhere,” my great-grandfather said, walking over towards us. “While your offer is most generous there is no reason to accept it. If someone as high as the arch-priest doesn’t know how to cure her ailment then I doubt the church could find the answer.”
Wait this man was a arch-priest? Was that a high position? I wasn’t quite to sure, but based on how my great-grandfather sounded it probably was.
“Duke Dawn, we merely are unfamiliar with her condition. I am sure that given some time, we will easily be able to cure her.” The priest or rather the arch-priest sounded sure of himself, but I couldn’t help but feel like something strange. Shouldn’t he have backed down the moment that my great-grandfather said no?
“Again, thank you, but your services are no longer required. I will make sure to give a generous donation to the church to thank you for what you've done.” My great-grandfather made sure to let the arch-priest know that he draw a line for him to stop.
“If you insist then I will most humbly accept your donation. And if you ever change your mind our doors will always be open,” he said before slowly walking away. Though I could feel him stare back at me before he disappeared from my sight.
“Grandpa!” I yelled eagerly seeing that there was nothing getting in my way from jumping into his arms. Despite my original feeling about him, a lot has changed in the past three years. He dedicated his entire being to making sure that I was properly taken care of, and through all of his efforts I couldn’t deny them.
“There’s my sweet angel. Have you been good today” he asked with a bright smile across his face.
“I was! I pwayed with Sola and Tully and ate with Auntie Sara. It was fun~!” I said happily giving him a small summary of what I did so far today. “Though I don’t wike that man, he’s creepy.”
“Yes, he is. Of course, my granddaughter would be able to tell that just by looking at him. Now if only my niece would have the same level of wariness.”
“Uncle I had little choice in the matter,” Auntie Sara said back to him. “The church are the only ones around here that can measure mana levels. I needed to know if Illya was sick or not. Despite his intentions, he was able to tell us Illya’s condition.”
“If that was all you wanted then you should have come to me first.”
“What? You knew? You knew and didn’t tell me?” Auntie Sara was mad, and I couldn’t blame her. I wanted to keep this a secret because I didn’t want to worry them, but it was hard to believe that great-grandfather knew and didn’t tell her. How was he able to find out in the first place?
“You know her lineage as well as I do. And beside the wall have ears. Thanks to this there will be no stopping what is to come,” he said sounding disappointed.
“Grandpa did Auntie Sara do something wrong?” I asked him, trying to help her because she only brought the arch-priest to check up on me.
“Yes sweetie. Auntie Sara brought in a bad man, and that bad man will attract more bad men here. Do you understand” I could tell that he was trying his best to explain this to me, but I still didn’t understand why she was being scolded for trying to help me, it was fair.
“No! Auntie Sara did nothing wrong!” I yelled, forcing him to let me down before running over to Sara. “Grandpa is mean! Auntie Sara is the best!”
“Hehehe~. Even when I mess up I am still at a higher standing than you~,” Auntie Sara said, gloating towards great-grander. I knew that he was just worrying for her, but he needed to be nicer to her.
“Illya, he is right thought,” Sara said, admitting her mistake. “In order to prioritize your health I brought a bad man here. I made a mistake. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay! Auntie Sara admits it and that’s all that matters~!” She knew what she did was wrong, but she didn’t do it to harm me. I couldn’t be mad her for that.
“Illya, you might say that now, but there will be bad men coming here very soon. Each one of them wants to harm you.” Grandfather was seriously trying to warn me, but I wasn’t worried in the slightest.
“It’s okay because I have everyone here who loves me and will protect me~!” Despite the dangers. I had two of the strongest bodyguards around, so nothing would ever harm me!
