White sands to white snow

The irony is that I didn't see much sand in Mexico, and I'm seeing very little snow in New York.

I will not lie that I love to travel, but traveling is hard. It is hard to actually find beautiful places or interesting things. Mexico for instance is so tourist focused it is like being back in America, but with a more obstructed view of the ocean. The best food I've ever had in Mexico was in Cancun. My friend and I went up to a stall that seemed to serve tacos. These tacos were absolutely incredible! But the man didn't want to serve us. He insisted it was too dangerous for us to be in the area that we were in and warned us that we should leave. I don't know if he was right or not. We never had any trouble, but we did have multiple people insist that we were in grave danger by hanging out where we were. As an ignorant tourist, I had booked an airbnb instead of wanting to stay at the resorts. I do that for multiple reasons. I tried to get one next to the resorts, so I assumed it was safe. I didn't know much about Cancun at all. The man did make us tacos. I think he did so out of concern that we wouldn't leave the area until we had found food (which was true).

The next day, my friend and I (probably the white-ist and palest people in Cancun), got a taxi to the resort area. It was as uninteresting as I thought it would be. Similar to Isla Mujeres, Cancun was over run with people and boats obstructing the views of the ocean. Mexicans walked by trying to sell us anything and everything, though I did buy a coconut because who doesn't love drinking straight from a real coconut. My friend and I walked along the shoreline, past the resorts and eventually through the backyards of large empty houses. This is where it got good. Soon there was rarely a person that walked by. The ocean seemed clearer from less disturbance. It just hit that time when the sun sets. That is the most beautiful sunset I ever saw. I still have the photos to edit. It was almost unnatural. It was every good sunset rolled together. Every stages brought out new colors and light patterns. The water started as a beautiful pale blue contrast to the warm sky, creating a rainbow in every direction. Then they blended together: purple shadows and golden highlights.

I never felt intersted in visiting half the places I've been to, but was surprised to find what I did. Mexico in my head was tourist stores, resorts, and dirty streets, but it is so much more. People go for the diving, spiritualism, or the club scene down here. I haven't actually tried any of those things out.  I found that I'm a very timid traveler, and modeling helps me out of that shell. Without it, I don't know where I'd be or what I'd do.
