Apocrypha: Behind the Scenes (January 29, 2023)

Normally I use these behind-the-scenes videos to talk about fun upcoming new projects, but this week you get a look at the YouTube sausage-making. By far the most overarching thing going on for the past week was YouTube's new rules and new rule interpretations, which have been causing consternation across the YouTube gun community. So let me give you the inside scoop, or at least the best information I have myself...

Edited to add: Iain Harrison's RecoilTV channel was just nuked this evening.

That’s a shame what YT is doing to 100% legal and law abiding citizens! Nothing illegal or wrong about any of you or others content! I need to subscribe to a few more creators to help!

Derrick Hall

Putting UT links in the patreon seems sensible, at least it'll finally force me to look at it more. I subscribed there but no real reason to click the vids.

paul h

Ah yes, well there was a ruling on the music video for “Love Missile F1-11,” that it needed to be edited to play in some jurisdictions for a very similar reason. “The instruction on the assembly of a firearm,” where a person screws a silencer onto the end of a MAC-11.

Jerry Harkins

Thank you!

Forgotten Weapons

Saw this and karls video and signed for patreon for both plus bloke and chap as you all make up 90% of my viewing, cancelled netflix to make up the difference . I spent some time in cambodia and vietnam so would love some indo china content. Im also a creator (travel and living abroad) who has been demonetised for reasons unfathonable so am in support of you all. Youtube sucks balls but is the biggest platform until we make it not so.

Andy Korteling

Ian, thanks for the update. I hope that your channel does not get taken down by retrospective strikes. Hating on suppressors is crazy. Here in the UK, they are sold 'vent libre' (i.e. without restrictions) for air weapons and are also readily available to licensed firearms owners. Indeed, I have heard that some ranges now encourage the use of suppressors, to reduce noise disturbance to their neighbours.

Derek Putley

They just said they aren't taking new creators.

Forgotten Weapons

Oh, they also have "gun=bad" policy? Or some other reason? If you can share.

Michal

I would love to be on Nebula, but they won't let me in. :(

Forgotten Weapons

Have you considered also more premium platform like Nebula? I saw banch of creators movine also there.

Michal

Love this always incredibly interesting content. Forgotten Weapons is the best. Glad we have back ups for when YT becomes a non-option. Ian, please keep up the good work. I recently reconnected with an old friend and we bonded over our shared interest in Forgotten Weapons!

Cmaster03

That crazy vegan woman in 2018 encountered the wrong people at YouTube HQ. Ian can you experimentally post a few Forgotten Weapons videos on YouTube that are just a 15 second explanation of the what the real video is about with a link in the description that takes people to another platform where the full video is hosted, just to see how many people actually go through with it?

Trigfur

If you are here on Patreon, there is no need to change at all. I will continue to post all the same things side by side on both platforms, you you are not missing out on anything.

Forgotten Weapons

Ian, perhaps I'm just not slick on the uptake but if we are on Patreon now how do we go about supporting you on Utreon? Do we need to cancel the Patreon account and move the money to Utreon?

Craig Wiess

Thanks!

Forgotten Weapons

I am now a proud Forgotten Weapons and InRange Tv patron, long time YouTube subscriber. Thank you for the great content and the chance to support you directly.

Ryan Thompson

yt... just sucks. whatever damn lefty is behind the curtain there. deleted google account for a good while. patreon, utreon, rumble, surplused, gunstreamer,..... FW got big enough people would follow and keep it alive. maybe better DO NOT wear french cammies or tiger stripe in vietnam. well, maybe goodol'jungle boots.

Guido Schriewer

Ian, adding blurring may *not* be beneficial. An Australian youtuber Rimmy Downunder made a video about this. His video got picked out because he blurred out some things.

Arnout van Mameren

Take a look around at the US federal and state level. There is, right now, a concerted full-court press against the private ownership of firearms and the depiction of their use. The "overlords" have their orders from on high. The rules make no sense because they don't want you to comply. They want you to disappear.

ViejoLobo

Putting a 30 round magazine into a weapon that's designed to take it already is as much 'Instructional modification' as putting gas in a car is. YT's bizarre and opaque rule enforcement is just baffling. Retroactive rule enforcement is also a real dick move on their part.

Strypgia

Are you posting this on YouTube as well, so current non Utreon subscribers will see it. Also, just bought the book and looking forward to reading it. Thanks for the heads up.

Terry

Thanks - I missed that one.

Forgotten Weapons

Of course blurring the sections will give the impression that there's some sort of porn in these vids . . . More seriously, wtf? This is not making the world a safer place, this is not cracking down on illegality; this is just making life difficult for honest people to make a living and stopping other honest folks from accessing entertaining and informative videos. The other stuff: battle of Dein Bein Phu stuff sounds really interesting, 10mm making a comeback? Sounds good. And talking of sounds, the sound effects for attaching a silencer - priceless. Thanks all the great videos Ian, and good luck. PS YouTube sausage making? Is this a reference to the quotation attributed to Otto von Bismarck: "“To retain respect for laws and sausages, one must not watch them in the making.”

Fruitbat44

It makes me sick to bring this up but would your HK MK23 video be a potential strike… at 12:40 you reattach the suppressor. Not sure if this helps or if you want anyone to point out potential “violations” but I really don’t want to see you lose the channel you’ve put your heart & soul into for over a decade.

William Flowers

Ta for the update. Hopefully one day we'll get a detailed exposé on the internal workings of YT. Should make both hilarious & tragic reading. Book sounds good. Another for my Pile of Shame. Pistol shenanigans sounds awesome.

Minion

You are welcome. I will support you as long as I can. The newest shirts I received are awesome and I appreciated meeting you in Vegas. My uncle passed away and I was asked to appraise his guns by my cousin, there are two that may be of interest for a video, one is a French pinfire revolver and the other is a cane gun. I can send picture if interested.

Steven E

No.

Forgotten Weapons

Do I need to pay on Utreon to see everything?

William Flowers

It's here: https://utreon.com/v/B2vgT4e8chk

Forgotten Weapons

Is all of your content on Utreon? I’m sure I’m the problem but I couldn’t find the Hush Puppy video and the search engine doesn’t seem very good. What am I missing?

William Flowers

No, that is not possible unfortunately.

Forgotten Weapons

A tripod is definitely more valuable than Jordan…sorry buddy 😜🤣

Eric Austin

It's really incredible to me that a content creator with millions of subscribers, thousands of videos, and god only knows how many daily views is retroactively penalized, left in the dark, and has no recourse. Will they start taking down video game content? Every FPS will have magazine reloads and attachment modifications

slipperybeluga

Another book to buy!

Grant Janzen

I don't think so. Rob ski from ak operator's union has had all of his videos demonetized for years and still got several removed and a strike

slipperybeluga

So Youtube has basically declared war. Good, let them become Tik Toc and die the same death.

Ivanovitch2885

I first noticed this with Print Shoot Repeat. Such a shame.

Rory

Oh good, I just checked and you guys on Utreon, too!

Jason

I think the reason for any of these strikes is because YouTube is anti-firearm and there have been a several 'mass shootings' in the US recently. And YouTube loves operating in a Kafka-esque manner. Well, Utreon here we come!

Jason

Seems like this is inevitable. I can’t believe YouTube’s allowed gun content as long as they have.

John Anderson

Is it possible to get a locked Utreon video that is viewable by Patreons, so you can use that instead of youtube videos?

SpaceCowboyfromNJ

Still have my Floatplane subscription.

nada

Just found you on Rumble.

Beccaskye

Good lord, I might find out how to thread a thing onto another thing!

GreenRuin

Will there be a HiPoint in 9X25 Dillon?

Gerald Woodard

Ohhhh! I wrote a paper on DBP in high school, some 40 yrs ago now, i am so excited!!!

Magnus Franzon Uvebrant

Does self-demonetising on YouTube confer any protection from channel strikes? I assume not? What a frustrating set of circumstances to deal with. It's beginning to feel this way with a lot of large companies, there's a prevailing attitude of enforcement by fiat and no attempt to consult or engage users or content creators. I wonder if advertisers get a person to speak to at YouTube?

Charles Easton

Sorry the Snap-On became a problem but YouTube has lost their minds. Next they'll ban home repair videos for showing how to load a nail gun.
