Ask Ian: Good Bullpup Conversions (ad-free)

From John on Patreon:

"You've covered your fair share of strange conversion of firearms. Have you ever come across a bullpup conversion that was actually useful, and not a kludge?"

Nope.

That's basically the whole answer.

Okay, to elaborate a bit, it's because making a bullpup use blue from either shoulder requires specific accommodation of the empty case ejection, and converting a standard rifle to bullpup configuration basically guarantees it will only be usable right-handed. Also, designing a good bullpup trigger requires specific intent in the design stage, and conversion triggers are always kludges. And lastly, the sights often end up mounted to some wobbly plastic extension.

I swear literally the only useful thing I've seen bullpup conversion kits used for is as cheap "futuristic" weapons in bad SciFi movies.

I rather, but sights get wobbly... that's not good, dislike much complicated takedowns. ak bp sounds tempting to me but... . kind of huge big and cool looking the miami vice 80s switec special of a mossberg 500 shell wich probably operates lousy. can't think of another oh.. I can. high standart(?) 870 bp with a huge maglite wasn't there? but hardly on other shotguns. 10/22s too many bolts too complicated. sks NO THANX. original.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but...

Forgotten Weapons

It looks terrible, but I wonder if it's good at maintaining zero and how in the world does its forward mag release work??? (!!!)

Dalbunosky

So you're suggesting the Mosin Nagant M91 bullpup conversion kit I've seen may not be the best weapon for a tank crewman?

Patrick Yamada

The current conversion being fielded by the Ukrainians seems to be a bit more refined, but still has the ejection port issue. As far as forward ejection design there needs to be a good way to quickly clear a stuck case or cases from the ejection path. Downward ejection requires long sleeves and long pants.

David K. Jernigan

It's made from the ground up as a bullpup, so it's not a conversion to me. An adapted design, yes.

Forgotten Weapons

would the Barret M95 count as a conversion of the m82, or was there enough new in it to disqualify it?

Rats. Guess I'll put away my hacksaw, coat hanger and zip ties

ViejoLobo

Oddly enough, I just remembered I originally found this channel while researching bullpup conversion kits for my AK.

Ian F

That was a long way of saying "no, by definition a conversion is a kludge"
