ArcFlash Labs EMG-02 CoilGun: Making SciFi Weapons Into Reality (ad-free)

ArcFlash Labs has come out with a new coil gun design that takes the best elements of their underpowered EMG-01 and their overly bulky GR-1 Anvil and melded them into a much handier EMG-02. This new design maintains the same muzzle velocity as the Anvil (200-250 fps / 60-75 m/s) but uses smaller projectiles (5/16" armatures). It is far better handling, with the balance much improved by having a single large capacitor mounted at the rear and a battery directly under the grip. That battery is also now a commercial off-the-shelf rechargeable lithium-ion type.

It's quite a lot of fun to shoot, and I am excited to see where this technology continues to develop!

Guessing about the same as me :-)

The traditional option is probably a diabolo shape. 30 caliber pellets should fit in the bore, but might not be long enough. I guess phillips insert bits fired with the blade toward the rear or screws in wooden dowels might be expedient and inexpensive for experimenting. On second thought, it shouldn't be that hard to 3D print stabilizers for a screw either.

Still feel like the Vm is too dang low. What don't I realize about electronics that makes this so wimpy?

Late arriving thought, here. 70 m/s is about the speed of an arrow from a bow. If you took one of the broadheads from a hunting arrow and modified the barrel to accept the barbs, would you then be looking at something with more accuracy and potential terminal-ballistic effects? Or, did I have too much coffee this morning?

I am impressed! Looks like a load of fun.

Great presentation! Thanks. Good to see the projectiles go down range and hear them. I want one, except current price is $2,515.50 with nice carrying case, but battery extra.

A baby step, but the wave of the future.

It's not a firearm, so it's not a machine gun.

Forgotten Weapons

full auto? is this a forbidden machine-gun?

We should call it a "coil cannon" instead of a rifle.

What If Brigade

In its current iteration a big bore PCP air rifle is more accurate and more powerful.

Okay the nerd in me wants to play around with projectile shape to see if you can improve accuracy. Fin stabilisation anyone?
