Very interesting!
I hadn't planned on watching the show when it came out, because it felt too 'Gen Z oriented', but now I'm in!
I kinda missed more of the Addams' subversive humor, where goth is good and insults are compliments... there was a bit of it, but I wanted more. The Addams always thrived on being the proud weirdos in a bland normie world, so changing it to magical school removes most of that. Still, I'm intrigued by the mystery, and charmed by the school! So let's see.
Now you definitely have to watch the 90s Addams Family movies, they are absolutely great. Fun camp masterpieces. Gomez and Morticia are couple goals in those. And you'll see Christina Ricci as (second) OG Wednesday!
Which brings me to... You definitely also have to watch Yellowjackets!! I saw someone else recommended it in another comment, and I'll second that for sure. Incredible show, spooky vibes, great characters, killer soundtrack.
Cojo said he hadn't seen anything like this show, and how gorgeous the shots were, so you should check Tim Burton's other movies, like Edward Scissorhands (1990), which is quite a modern take on the goth Addams vibes.
And Blake commented on the swordfighting and how the quality declined in the Star Wars sequels so, does he know about Bob Anderson? He's a movie industry legend: he was an Olympic fencer in the 1940s and went on to choreograph all the Star Wars og trilogy's lightsaber fights (he's even inside the Vader costume for many of them), and all the Lord of the Rings fights, all the Pirates of the Caribbean sword action, a couple James Bond movies, Highlander... basically any memorable sword fight in a movie from 1960 to 2006 was him.
He did what I think is the single best sword fight ever filmed in The Princess Bride (1987), you should all see it!! Don't turn your nose at the girlie title, it's one of the greatest adventure movies ever made, I swear!
