Ancient Greek YouTube

AnotherYouTube parody, eh? Isn't this all a little... base? Maybe. And yet, I'd like to think that there's at least something a little more interesting about the YouTuber phenomenon, something that cuts a little closer to home about the nature of both us as individual humans and us as a culture-- I think it's a little different than just having Zeus and Heracles walking around a mall and going "whoa, what the heck?" Maybe it's not. Maybe if it's funny, it doesn't really matter. So, is it funny?

I think the art is quite solid in the first panel, the second panel I'm not sure-- it looks worse, and yet its also depicting a type of expression which itself always looks horrid-- the "Youtube Apology" face. There are two types. The first, usually seen in men, is the wide-eyed, could-cry-at-any-second-but-holding-it-back, calm but secretly terrified, "I'm sorry for disappointing my fans/that girl is lying, I never groomed anyone" face. The second type, often seen in women, is the not-dolled-up, not-posed, horribly unflattering, face-twisted mid-ugly cry "Oh my god I'm so sorry I never meant to make anyone upset and now everyone's mad at me, I just can't even handle this, excuse me for a moment (I'm sort of the victim here too, see)" face. The former I think is more iconic and actually looks funnier, but the latter I think makes way more narrative sense.

Greek myths are dripping with comedy potential, and there's a lot of other stuff you could do with these. One of my roommates suggested a comic about popular YouTubers taking "The Orpheus Challenge" and attempting to retrieve their loved ones from the underworld without looking back, presented with the same nonchalant tone as if one were just taking the "Cinnamon Challenge" or that Drake one where people kept getting hit by cars. "Woah, woah, woah, bros... I know I'm not supposed to... but I just GOTTA look back" Jake Paul says to his front-facing camera, followed instantly by a moderately disappointed "awwww shit." Hephaestus doing gold-digger pranks, Tantalus doing vlogs titled "Almost had it today"... the options are limitless. But for everyone's sake, I will hold off. For now, anyway.

Did you draw the channel icon? The face looking so dorky compared to the thumbnail is the funniest part for me
