Originally, the comic was going to include a little bar chart or something for each category that would display the levels of "Irony" "Rage" and "Smarm" with reddit high in smarm but low in irony, twitter high in irony and medium in smarm, and 4chan high in rage and irony. Ultimately, there wasn't really enough room, and I think the illustrations are funnier, so I left it out.
4chan's proto-incel theories about women have always fascinated me in a perverse way; I used to browse the /r9k/ boards like some sort of online anthropologist. While there was a powerful blanket of hatred over everyone, there was a stronger aura of deep misery and self-hatred. As people have pointed out, if there were a way to somehow synthesize these absurd theories, rooted in legitimate concerns on some level, with a male-positive feminist analysis, there might be some hope. But unlike something like marxism, this is a movement with no real enemy to speak of, so maybe its a lost cause, and our sad little friends are confined to a life of hateposting a jacking themselves off into oblivion. Who knows?
