On one of the days during the Majorca workshops, we drove to a derelict monastery I knew in a remote location and planned a shoot there. It’s always a pleasure to find abandoned places that haven’t been completely covered in graffiti.
There can be a certain grace in decay, but once graffiti is introduced, the atmosphere is lost for everyone—except the graffiti artist. This place, however, still had its raw beauty intact.
The stairwell was mostly gone, but Wiana was determined to get up there. So, we figured out a way to get her up safely—and just as importantly, to get her down again afterward.
The last two images were shot with the Lomo Petzval 56mm on a shift/tilt adapter, which is why the sharpness is selectively on the model, creating a soft, dreamlike quality to both the skin and the scene.
How do you feel about the balance between natural decay and human intervention in abandoned spaces?
