The born into slavery was a easy card for the liberal western states to accept- to assuage the gods of civil war! - short term! As you said generations of free slaves labour had given the southern states( that have always be backward, the chance to hold on to something! And Lincoln knew this... As soon a Lincoln raised a black regiment ( the 54th Massachusetts- if you man have not seen- glory! Watch it!! Lacking! ) When abolition was announced- the south knew the writing was on the wall!! But instead of easing there brutal system! Decided to go to full blown war! Knowing full well- end game there fucked! But so afraid to give up their way of life would rather be destroyed! Even tho they could have switched up and fixed up- Thats how deep the devils minds work!
