Honestly, with none of the characters having been previously established as smokers, I don't see how the story would make sense to suddenly bring it in.

It seems (at least in my area of the world) smoking is not as common as it used to be. But, it is clear that you are much better at a narrative than I am, so trust your instincts and Ill trust your judgement!
