Uhhh. They kinda do in that that would require his death? Don’t think it’s nearly as easy as you’re making it out to be. Also, I doubt things would really change all too much anyway

2022-03-12 17:48:04 +0000 UTCTo blab more about the annoying(ly human) aspects of Subaru's character that were brought out in this episode, he wasn't just being self-absorbed regarding Emilia, but regarding the world around him and the people in it as well. His failure to read the room, his disregard for Emilia's wishes, his dishonorable behavior during the duel, etc. He's been through incredible pain already by this point, but that doesn't excuse his behavior. He's been thinking of many things, and his relationships in general, as all about Subaru, and what Subaru can do, and how people respond to Subaru, and Subaru this and Subaru that. Again, not exactly selfish, but definitely self-absorbed. Not sure if that makes sense, it's kind of tricky to convey (this show has LAYERS, and definitely is the 'show don't tell' style), but a person can love someone else, and still be expressing and thinking about that love in an unhealthy, immature way. If Subaru had been a bit further along his journey to maturity, he might have seriously considered Emilia's wishes at the beginning, and initiated a conversation about it to understand WHY she wanted the things she did (ie, placing her as of equal importance to himself, rather than simping over her as just an object of his obsession). Just my two cents. I enjoy your reactions, you both are honest and fun to watch and genuinely take the time to try to understand each story and the nuances of it.

Yes, he feels genuine love for Emilia, but until now he definitely has been pretty self-absorbed in terms of the way he approached and thought about that love and relationship. He's still kind of a simp-- like Emilia said, 'the me that you imagine me to be must be wonderful' or to that effect. Not seeing Emilia for herself, but stuck on the one-dimensional image he's built of her in his mind. All comes down to healthy, open communication BEFORE stuff like this goes down. Which wasn't occurring beforehand. Yeah, they had good moments together, but they both carry a LOT of pain and darkness that they haven't even started to open up about until now. Emilia can be just as closed off and bad at communication as Subaru, IMHO.
