Podcast 31 - Project: PILOT - week 4 - Discussion

I started off week 4 of my current pilot workshop with a discussion where I shared some newly selected favorite and least liked clips. The class is usually taken up by reviews of student work. As happens with every group of new students, there are always a few who decide to include flashback scenes in their short films. These clips were chosen to demonstrate why this is not a good idea.

The first clip, from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, is not on the topic of flashbacks, but on the importance of getting the viewer to understand what's happening and how it's happening. I am interested to hear from anyone who also found the scene confusing. i honestly did.

I still think that the lack of direct visual at 2:45 leaves room for some ambiguity as to the contents of the second envelop but I am being pedantic. Terrible scene.

I don't remember much about the Nolan Batman movies, but I've heard others complain about his editing, such as Jim Emerson: https://vimeo.com/28792404
