Without giving any more context, and because it's easy to miss: In one of the first 3 episodes, don't remember which one, Ed and Al were researching Alchemy, and there it was mentioned that the inhabitants of an ancient country called "Xerxes" all vanished in a single night. I think it was mentioned alongside the Ishval civil war.
