Youtube Videos Toppic Suggestions Post

So, I am close to handing in the thesis, which means I will start doing the Youtube videos again as well. As promised they will be prereleased on the Patreon and as promised you will be able to suggest and vote on the next topic of the 101 videos. We will start there, but I am open to other video suggestions as well. Feel free to suggest future topics in the comments!

My plan for the next video is, as I think it is a very fundamental, if not THE most fundamental, element to painting with a brush: "Consistency of Paint, Amount of Paint on the Brush and Brushcontrol".

Please do suggest other topics, I will pick those that are doable and put up a poll, so you can all vote on it.

Thanks for your support and I am happy that the content will soon increase drastically again :)

Stay creative and don't forget to spread the word about the Patreon with your friends (And not friends. And basically everyone you know. And also those you don't know. You get the picture!)

I see where this is coming from :D

A video on preventing chalkiness when applying paint

meirion evans

One focusing on true metallics, I'm just throwing ideas out now. I'm guessing the YouTube videos a intended to be quicker explanations and shorter videos.

One on painting bone or skulls could be useful

I will try to think of some suggestions for the YouTube videos, perhaps separate ones working on specific colours. So one on red, another on yellow etc

I really like your suggestion of one on consistency/quantity of paint and brush control

I might not use enough water. I’ll try and recreate it later this week. Right now I’m using some wet palette paper and I want to finish the mini before cleaning the palette

I see! I am asking because this is a big topic, and it's touching on many aspects - for example I would have attributed this towards general theory of what highlightcolors work on what base colors. That is the reason why I have mainly done whole projects on the patreon and was touching on subjects as they arise while painting. I guess I should try to find a way to code the videos accordingly. Maybe have a bit of an overview or at least a rough outline of topics covered during the intro, just like with the colors. But I will also put the general topic on my list of videos yet to create :)

I was thinking about it after watching your Orruk video, you highligthed skorne red with a boneish color with great result. It would never have hit me to use such a color, i would have looked for another brighter red. So some color theory combined with tips and trix for different colors i guess :p

Björn Grunde

thanks for your comment! when you say "how to chose colors" could you specify that more please?

Trovarion

One thing I was thinking of: Are you covering your sponges with wnough water? there should be like half a milimeter of water between your sponge and your paper. if you are not using enough water there is not adhesion force through the water it doesn't come down again properly. Do you have a picture of the paper doing what you described?

Trovarion

I would like a video about how you choose colours and achieve great contrast. I think this is something a lot of us struggle with.

Thanks for the input, i will put it on the list! To make it short, i dont use washes. They are great when you want quick results, but they usually dont help with what i want. I occasionaly use them as filters but definitely not for shading. I am a bit hesitant to make a video about it as people who are painting for tabletop might be offended by it, but i will think about how to make a video that avoids doing that :)

Trovarion

I never heard of that. My paper rolls up as it is expanding on the side where it touches the sponge and soaks up the water, but it rolls out flat again on it's own within a minute!

Trovarion

Have you made a video on the use of washes? I saw your bloodreaver skintone video yesterday and I made me think that I am using washes the wrong way. Right now I am using a lot of wash (usually agraxx earthshade) directly on the minis hitting every recess not matter how profound they are, from deep sharp recesses to soft bumps on the mini. I think it could be beneficial to hear your thoughts on when to use wash and when would you just paint the shade in? should the wash be diluted - if so how much? do you apply it everywhere or only on certain parts of the mini? Just an idea

Simon Andersen

yes ... i have seen it...i was speaking about how to make a good blending in a big Surface...the skin of a 75 mm for example....naked skin or big clothes surface

THIS!! I am SO looking forward to see a tutorial on this topic, though I am excited to see how you will show this. I always find it hard to compare videos with my own paints when I paint. I find that in videos the paint often looks like its not super thin in the pallette, but on the mini you can see the thin layers applied. I just viewed some of your videos. How do you make your wet pallette? it looks like you are using parchment paper but when I use that it folds up and doesn't stick to the sponge.

Simon Andersen

thanks for the suggestion! Have you seen the glazing video already? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=am7cZw2jKIQ Is that what you mean? if not, what would you like to see different?

Trovarion

i think how to blend transitions by brush would be a good topic

Sergio Blanco Carreño

No. Next skintone thing i will do - probably a bust - i will work with the airbrush, but I don't really like working with the airbrush, only very situational - brushwork is more fun to me :)

Trovarion

Will you also be adding Airbrushing consistency in this too?
