A Short History of the 303

Our new video is finally out! If you followed our recent drum pattern and Cheat Sheet releases this might not come as a surprise to you ;) This is the next entry in our little "Short History" series - but it's not about a drum machine this time. Instead we treat you with our favourite basslines from one of the world's most iconic mono synths. And the best thing: All of the 303 transcriptions are already included in the video :)

Our past few months have been filled with 303 goodness: We listened to so many different tracks, transcribed and programmed 303 lines, researched the history of the machine, experimented with distortion pedals and different ways to mix a 303. And this definitely renewed our appreciation for the "silver box" - it is much more versatile than most people give it credit for!

Originally we wanted to make the video with only the solo 303 patterns, but when we added one of the drum tracks for fun it became clear that we had to do this for all of them - it made everything so much more entertaining and it's really interesting to hear the bassline and drums interact with each other :)

And thank you again for your 303 pattern recommendations! It wasn't easy to decide which ones to include in the video, but if your favourite isn't in there don't be sad, maybe there will be a second episode someday ;)

SPOILERS AHEAD

For your convenience here are links to some drum pattern transcriptions used in the video:

Update: Also here's a YouTube playlist with all the tracks referenced in the episode so you can listen to the originals :)

Awesome video! I also found some new songs/artists to check out. Time to pick up the Behringer TD-3 again and go through your guide to help make sense of it.

Sorry, I was being lazy. I thought you'd transcribed it :)

Hi Sanjeev! The segment with the 303 pattern for Higher State starts at about 9:01 in the video :)

Captain Pikant

Am I missing something? I can't seem to find the 303 pattern for a higher state.

Sanjeev Yawanarajah

Yes it's a surprisingly good choice :)

Captain Pikant

Thanks Michael, that makes us really happy :) :)

Captain Pikant

No way! 😂 We couldn't have planned this any better!

Captain Pikant

I guess it's no accident, that Patreon says you have 303 posts :)

G’day Captain and intern, I couldn’t let it go just by leaving a comment on YouTube. That was the most exceptional video. It just seemed to do everything for me like a walk down memory lane. Thank you so much for all your work. 👍🇦🇺

Michael spykstra

Nice video, thanks. And now I am relieved that I'm not alone in putting the 303 in my ambient music!

Mike McClure

Great video! Looking forward to program the 303!

Now only one question remains. Will this do even better than the 909 video? :)
