Marshall Jefferson - Move Your Body / House Music Anthem (Drum Pattern No. 62)

Update: Thanks to our Patron DJ 312 we were able to make an improved version of the transcription. If it was too unclear for you before then you should give this one another shot!

Thanks to our patron Chad for pointing us towards Marshall Jefferson and "Move Your Body", one of the classic Chicago House tracks featuring the TR-707. I'm not kidding, these Tambourine parts were among the trickiest things I've ever transcribed. The Tambourine sound is partially masked by the Hats, Kick and Snare, which makes them a little ambiguous...

If you're up for some music documentaries about House music, you should take a look at these two:

Yeah that's true, you can hear the fader movements in a few places :)

Marshall Jefferson at 15:25: "The Story of When House Music Went Global" "Look, we were’t musicians, man. We weren’t song writers. We did what we did. We did it extremely good for our talent level...I don't think the song writing was there"…. I heard that Ron Hardy mixed Move your body...and he moved the faders in real time...some "funky stuff" might have happened.

Dang... I think you might be right - although some transitions line up with the way I transcribed it (for example the tambourine appearing and disappearing). I'll get back to you after I've double checked everything :)

Hello Captain Pikant, the intern might have shifted the pattern a 1/4 note while transcribing it. I had already trouble mixing this song and figuring out where the 1 count is while I only had the song on vinyl. I believe the snare is actually sitting on the 2 and 4 count. Yes, and that's where it also took me a long time figuring it out back then; the beat starts with 8 kick drums! But I believe the first kick starts on the 4 count. Therefore the first Snare is also on the 4 count and the rhythm is a classic "4 on the floor" with the snare on the 2 and 4. I also had trouble figuring out where the piano riff starts. The E minor chords actually sit on the 1 and 2 count. I only figured that out when Solardo and Marshall Jefferson came out with the remake of "Move your Body" in 2019. I'm open for discussion ... (and sorry for blaming the intern ;-)
