Drum Patterns Explained: The Amen Break + HQ WAV files

Hello everyone! In our newest episode of "Drum Patterns Explained", we take a look at the drum pattern behind the legendary Amen Break, how it works, its little details and what makes it special (including some resampling and slicing). Attached to this post you will find the high quality WAV files mentioned in the video (and the 909 kick we used), in case you want to try some slicing and dicing yourself :)

You can find two transcriptions of the Amen Break on our Patreon: The 808 drum machine version and the more detailed acoustic version from this episode.

We hope you like it, have a great weekend!

Hi John, I used the Black Oyster (60s Beatles-type) kit. It's really well suited for those old-school breakbeats :)

What addictive drums kit did you use?

John Brown

Hi Ben, we used the "once" one-shot mode on the slices. That only works because the project tempo exactly matches the loop we used (both 162 BPM), but we decided to do it this way because it's easier to understand for the viewers. If you want the slices to follow the tempo, you have to use stretch. But then you also have to place the start and the end point of the sample, which is a lot more work.

Thanks Captain, really useful! I've been having trouble beat slicing on the Deluge, and this has helped a lot. I'm still having trouble getting it sound quite right. What settings did you use on your slices? (once, loop, stretch etc?). Keep up the great work!
