Zero Kate Thirty debrief

Zero Kate Thirty, the standalone Christmas mini-episode, is available here.

I feel like my aim’s been a little off in the past couple of episodes. Reflecting on it, I think I’ve (unwittingly) made the mistake of trying to write episodes you guys will like instead of writing episodes I want to play.

This came from a good place – I love and appreciate you guys, and I want to make you happy – but I think it led to a couple of meh episodes. I’m just not smart enough to write episodes that other people are going to love. I can only write the stuff I find interesting and hot, and if people like it or not is up to the universe.

Rick Rubin has some wise words about this on Instagram

Zero Kate Thirty
In early December, I had the idea that we could race out a little Christmas episode for you guys. My plan was to dust off an old draft for an action set-piece, bring it up to date in the new engine, and get it out on Christmas Eve.

I wasn’t sure it was a good idea – there was no sex in the outline, and I wasn’t sure anyone would enjoy playing it. But I felt like it might shake my writing out of its rut and, with Rick Rubin’s advice ringing in my ears, I decided to just go for it.

The writing experience
This was fucking hell! Everything took longer than I expected. I was routinely burning 12+-hour days all through December, turning down social invites (not that I got many 😭) and just trying to get everything written in time.

In the end, some planned things had to be cut, including a third battle branch (where the heroine could investigate the explosion at the south wall instead of securing the ops centre or assisting at the main gate; this would’ve led to a CQB rifle shootout with suicide bombers in the motor pool) and some alternative options after securing the ops centre.  Plus a lot of polishing.  And it was still a couple of days late.

It was also great, I had so much fun writing this that I just didn’t wanna do anything else. I really enjoyed writing Zero Kate Thirty, I really enjoyed playing Zero Kate Thirty, and I was so pleased and humbled that the mini-episode got generally positive feedback.

Some of my favourite parts of this episode were:

Overall, I think writing this episode was really good for the project. I feel like the main thing I learned from it was that I just need to try to make episodes that I like, not ones that I think will be popular.*

I’m going to try to take a few more risks with the writing in 2024; I hope you guys will enjoy it.

I agree with a lot of others on here mr the crush...... many want the story written for them, whereas you have the task of actually DOING THE WORK and BEING CREATIVE. Stay true to you and it will be awesome. Plus, is the heat and chaos of battle as part of a team comparable to working alone and undercover? I would imagine...as that's ALL I can do that they'd be 2 separate things, each terrifying, but in different ways. These are not minor issues, these are subtle nuances, well handled. just my two penneth.

I'm very late to the party, didn't even know this was a thing when it released, but loved it so much! The tension is great for a text only experience and the writing is so good. My only complaint is that the mini episode doesn't quite fit with the main game, there are hints on how the MC ended up where she is at the beginning of the main game, but personally I feel the main game is very much a fish out of the water story, with MC being a pencil pusher and never did any field work. It just feels a bit weird now, knowing that MC had fought suicide bombers and RPG wielding soldiers, and she still gets super nervous infiltrating a Thailand brothel and hospital at night lol. But all these minor issues could be fixed with a few tweaks, loved this episode!

I absolutely loved Zero Kate Thirty. The element of danger is what makes the story exciting. The black bag jobs and this are heart-racing. While it was very well done, I found “Girls Night Out” lacked tension because of that.

Couldn’t she complete the black bag op topless? Why wait for the next morning heheheh 🥴🥴🥴

I really enjoyed the xmas special. This is the kind of stuff that makes this whole "Female Agent" thing interesting in the first place, after all. We aren't playing a backpacker becoming a hooker over time, but a highly skilled, well trained spy on an infiltration mission. As hot as the sexy stuff can be, the juice of the story is that the sexy stuff is happening to someone who can complete a black bag op in time for topless work in the morning.

I'm glad it didn't go the Lara Logan route where she was covering a riot and ended up getting raped. She was on 60 Minutes

In fact, there are still many scenes depicting Kate's capture, and there is no need to end with a headshot.

tbh honest i enjoyed the xmas special, nice change of pace. The problem for you is that if you try to make everyone happy, then you make no one happy. So write the story the way you want, listen to feedback but accept you wont be able to make everyone happy.

I kinda know what you mean. I've recently published a multi part story on Literotica and at some point I had to stop reading comments. Everyone had an opinion about how the story should go on, about how good or bad my writing was and it paralyzed me. Good thing here is that you have good taste. So if it's hot for you, then I'm certain we're going to love it. Just believe in yourself.

Great writing and final battle was great as well! But pity that getting crit 20 rolls all the time or misses all the time didn’t really make a difference in the outcome….
