New feature: condoms!

Moar work on the Sex Engine v2 prototype today!  Yesterday's rebalancing seem to be working well – I'm much happier with the pace of the scenes now.

One of the biggest changes to expect is a shift away from making lots of small decisions to making fewer big decisions in each sex scene.

For example, in the current Sex Engine, deciding that your agent should give an NPC a blow job involves making lots of small decisions:

In the new version, a lot of this stuff is handled automatically once you decide that your agent is going to perform oral sex on an NPC.  The game will make a set of SURPS skill rolls (weighted, so that an NPC getting a bad BJ from the hottest girl ever to touch his cock in his life is likely to appreciate it anyway) and then create a short BJ description based on the dynamics of the scene.

Then – once the scene has developed forwards in some meaningful way – you (or the NPC) will make a decision about the next big step to take.

We added something new to the prototype today: condoms!  Yes, Female Agent has finally caught up with the safe sex campaigns of the early 1990s.

When I wrote the first version of the game, I glossed over condom use on the grounds that I didn't personally find them sexy.  Since then, I've been persuaded that they have a place in the game (if only for the opportunity to write in a scene where an agent who normally insists on condoms goes bareback for the first time).  At some stage – possibly in the next release – I plan to add in an option for the agent to set her birth control preferences during the Lifepath which the game can then reference during the mission.

Anyway, thinking along these lines encouraged me to add a "condom logistics" section to the new Sex Engine prototype.  The agent can now request the partner use a condom (or not use a condom), and the NPC can make his own risk assessment.  Condom use applies a minor penalty to SURPS rolls.

One example of things that might want to remain under the player's control could be whether she strips naked, or just pulls her skirt up. One will give a scene a very different feel to the other.

The use of condoms leads to a slight penalty for SURPS dice. The use of condoms, however, also leads to higher income in the HCC. Or? OR ???

EDIT: I wrote this before reading the last paragraph :P..and about the condoms, it is also an opportunity to add bonus interactions with a partner with the relative checks (i.e. she asks for a condom, he refuses and they decide to go without anyway..or she asks and he accepts..or she asks, he accepts and then cheat..or.. )

Smart approach, I don't think you could have done it better a different way. And *maybe* (only you can answer :P) this doesn't block you from "forcing" some player intervention into the macro scenes (for specific standard purposes or for special ones)

Reducing the micromanagement sounds generally good, although it could be taken too far if you end up having her decide things the player doesn't want, that's something to be cautious about. I'd try to leave it flexible enough that adding some decisions back in isn't too hard just in case.
