Balancing pace & detail

I had a challenging day on the Sex Engine v2 prototype today.  I was feeling unhappy with the way the actual sex scenes were playing out; it felt like I was getting into too much detail, and the pace was falling flat after a certain point.

But increasing the pace risks skipping over important moments (like the little series of escalations that make the buildup towards sex with someone new so sexy).  And – worse – it can mean that the writer takes away control of the player character, and makes her do things that don't fit the player's vision of her.  It's a tough thing to balance.

I identified the problem this morning, then in the afternoon tried a totally new approach that seems like it might work really well.  I've sketched out a framework for this new approach today: I'll add it to the prototype tomorrow and see how it plays.

Interesting, even though I'm not sure I understood the "too much detail=flat" equation. Balance is imprortant, but even more important is the uniqueness of each encounter. It will be really difficult to reach, but if you make it then Keanu Reaves could call you breathtaking. And then you life would be complete.
