1.6 Dev Poll

It turned into a real grind, but the avatar upgrade is finally complete!  

The plan for 1.6 was always to Upgrade the Random NPCs.  This is required before we implement Bangkok, because right now all the NPCs feel very “same-y”.

This is because NPCs only have a few distinguishing features programmed in.  They don’t have their own Kinks, or preferences about how and where to fuck the agent.  They’re all exactly as good in bed as each other.  

So we need to code in some differences to make sex with them more interesting, as this will be a core part of the gameplay in Bangkok.

However: there's an option to sneak in a little side quest first.


A target of opportunity

Five Kink Vignettes happen in university:

The game picks 5 Kink Vignettes at random in each playthrough.  (Since there are only five in total, you always get the same ones).

A while back I asked the fans to submit their own ideas for Kink Vignettes.  I got loads of great storyboards back, including but not limited to:

I’d like to propose that we use the 1.6 sprint to polish up at least some of these storyboards and get them into the game.  My suggestion is that we time limit this sprint, so at the end we release what’s complete and move on – no extensions.

Pros

(That second point is the strategically interesting one.  My plan is to edit the new ideas, so they feel consistent with the rest of the game.  But ideally, I’ll work with the people who want to become regular contributors so their submissions need less and less editing in the future, and eventually we’ll have a circle of people who can all write in the “game style”.  If it works, the flow of new high quality content into the game could be much faster.)

I would like it, but I swear like, a year or 1.5 years ago ago i saw this game first, and was excited, made a mental note to come back when it was further... Well, now I'm happy to support it, but uh... While the core has come a long way, the story and "main part" of the game is still almost no further. ... And the upgraded NPCs is something needed to advance the story. Kink Vignettes are cool, but they're just an unnecessary delay to "opening up" the game. ... I enjoy the backstory and everything it brings, but at least a sandbox version of Bangkok where the gameplay loop is playable would be WAY NICER than KVs.

We've got a good bit right now. I voted to get more engines going so we climb closer to Bangkok. What happened to the polishing days thing? Couldn't the KVs be a part of that idea? The once every 1 to 2 weeks of working on something different?

I'm a bit surprised that KVs are doing so poorly in the poll. I mean, adding them in is Moar Content. NPCs just adds some variety to what we already have... It's absolutely something that needs to happen, don't get me wrong, but I really expected more people to want the variety of added Kvs.

Thanks Jax, another player suggested something kind of similar with the Relationship Tables. I'll give it some thought.

Aha! This is an intelligent observation, but it's not right: the Kink Vignette partners are pre-written (and painted in broad strokes, since the Vignettes are meant to be short and evocative). They don't make use of random NPCs. Apologies, I should have been clearer on that.

as for the kink vignette's, have you thought about limiting it to, let's say, 10 different kinks at first and setting up a couple sexy 'mad libs' style write up for each online where we can then enter suggestions. While they would be 'cookie cutter' at first, at any time you can add different scenarios at leisure and when time permits.

Crazy thought: if enough classmates get injured in cycling / climbing / skateboarding / ice-skating / skiing accidents and they all get sympathy fucks from Kate, someone starts a business putting fake casts on classmates' arms and legs.

This. Some of those kink vignettes sound like they'd benefit from having NPC generation working really well, like the "normally timid boyfriend" (low confidence but has dominant and sadist kinks once you get him over that confidence check-roll).

The game is in the prologue for 2 years now. That's okay, it's a very good prologue. But I think it's time to push for Bangkok now. You can make the prologue even better later on.

From a dev point of view completing the NPC generation before implementing the vignettes makes more sense as you would probably want to back port the random NPCs into the vignettes, and gets closer to a working game loop

NPC Upgrade for Bangkok's Open World Framework seems to be a better option. Making a better 'prologue' is better added after the Bangkok part is completed. Don't forget the main part of this game.

I don't think adding more Kink Vignettes adds much to the game right now, compared to getting to Bangkok. The interesting proposition is really the strategic value of getting a base of regular contributors, which promises more content all around. But cultivating that is an ongoing effort, it's not done with a 30 day effort now and another when we are in Bangkok in a few months. I feel it would be better served by dedicating one week of every month to managing and adding contributions

The NPC upgrade feels much more important, considering that the kink vignettes are more or less only an extension of the character creation screen. Just a personal opinion, but I think that implementing a kink vignette is something you can do as a short sprint when you need some variation in your work schedule. So I feel that there's no real need for that extended sprint (30/60 day) to happen.

I would be okay with the fan submitted kink vignettes if you would limit it to maybe 2 weeks. Pick the best ones or a variety of kinks to start. On the other hand, maybe you could put all those unedited vignettes into a "beta" build and just designate them as such (fan submitted and unedited). That way patreons could discuss and give their input... jm2c

I love the kink idea, but I feel like upgrading the NPCs to push out Bangkok is more important, since I imagine once Bangkok is out there will be a gameplay loop instead of just a solid end. It will make waiting for new content (such as implementing these kink vignettes) much easier
