Crowdsourcing hometowns
Added 2019-02-06 12:10:42 +0000 UTC
I've just tweaked the "hometown" code, and we can now accept requests for which hometowns you'd like to see included. Post them here or PM them to me on Discord.
Rules: they must be in the USA, England, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. An immigrant Lifepath option is something we would like to include in the future, but we can't support that yet.
Ideally, please submit them in the following format:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
City: the hometown's name, e.g. "Manhattan"
State: the area, e.g. "NY"
Type: "urban", "suburban" or "rural"
Hospital: the name of a hospital where local people are born, e.g. "Mount Sinai Hospital"
Hospital location: the location of the hospital, e.g. "New York"
Social classes available: "elite, upper middle class, middle class, working class, working poor" delete any that shouldn't be available in this location (i.e. elite families don't live in Bumfuck, Idaho)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Optionally, you can also write a short "growing up" vignette for each of the social classes. Here's the one for Manhattan:

Elite: You grow up in SoHo, a hip New York neighbourhood known for designer boutiques, fancy chain stores and high-end art galleries. Your childhood home is a multi-million dollar split level condo with massive rooms and hardwood floors that you ride your trike around on for hours.
You take regular holidays both overseas and upstate, where you love to ride horses through the beautiful countryside.
Upper middle class: You grow up in Hell's Kitchen, a bohemian New York neighbourhood that borders Broadway and has long been the home of actors and arts organisations. It's known for international restaurants and is a hub of gay culture.
Your childhood home is a big apartment in a brownstone overlooking the Hudson River.
Middle class: You grow up in Alphabet City, a laid-back New York residential neighbourhood with trendy restaurants and bars. Your childhood home is an apartment on East 7th Street near Tompkins Square Park, where students, artists and young families sunbathe and walk their dogs.
Working class: You grow up in the Lower East Side, where gritty alleys and tenement-style buildings mix with upscale apartments and chic boutiques. Your childhood home is a rented tenement one floor above a pawn shop.
Working poor: You grow up in East Harlem, a mostly Hispanic and black New York neighbourhood also known as El Barrio. Your childhood home is a Section 8 tenement on one of the projects: when cops come here, they come in groups.

(If you don't include these, the game will generate a generic snippet instead, so these are optional. The game can support multiple snippets for each social class in each location.)
Town: Redruth
Province: Cornwall, England
Type: "Sub-urban"
Hospital: Treliske Hospital
Hospital location: Truro
Social classes available: Elite, upper middle class, middle class, working class
Elite: You grow up just outside the town on a 10 acre homestead with plenty of servants and workers. Your father owns a 5 star hotel in a very prestigious part of the county and your mother a highly respectable therapist. You go to the all girls school Truro High School for girls the best school available for a young lady in your area.
Upper Middle Class: You live in a large house in the nicest part of town. Your father is a doctor and your mother is a manager of a local supermarket. You go to Truro School which is an excellent school but is mixed gender. To the disappointment of your father.
Middle Class: You live in a modest home in an average part of town. Your father works in the local factor as the foreman and your mother is a teaching assistant in a primary school. You attend the local school Redruth school, although nothing spectacular you manage to stay in with a good crowd.
Working class: You live on a council estate in the roughest part of town crime is rampant and if you have any siblings you have to share a room with them. Your father works for a local building firm and your mother works as a cleaner in the local old peoples home. You attend the local school Redruth school and although nothing spectacular you struggle to break away from the reputation your neighbourhood and unfortunately fall into the wrong crowd.
Just some bare bones build on this however you want. And keep up the great work Crush!

City: Harrogate
Province: North Yorkshire, England
Type: "sub-urban"
Hospital: Harrogate District Hospital
Hospital location: Harrogate
Social classes available: elite, upper middle class, middle class, working class
Elite: You grow up on the steet adjacent to The Stray, a several acre long public park raising your medium-sized town house well into the millions of pounds in value; your father owns a local law-firm and your mother is a professor of biology at Harrogate College. You want for nothing growing up, easily able to go to the more exciting nearby cities of York or Leeds.
Upper middle class / Middle Class: Harrogate centre itself is pretty small, and you live a short ten minute walk from it, well-to-do and generally easy going your parents, who are both teachers at St. Aidan's Church of England High School; allow you to have a comfortable allowance and work hard for you to go to College. Growing up Harrogate left you bored with little challenge, you could spend your time going to the pictures, local festivals and not much else really.
Working class: You grow up in Bilton, just outside Harrogate Proper, the community is kind but troubled; most people have jobs like your Father who is a labourer and your Mother who co-owns a local hairdressers, but drugs are a problem and vandalism is all too common. From a young age you wanted to "get out" or otherwise you'd be trapped in your Father's career or worse, hooked on drugs by peer-pressure.

Naked Gemma is a perfectly respectable name for an 18-year-old girl!

Type: Urban
Hospital: Sainte-Justine Hospital
Hospital Location: Montréal
Social classes available: Any class
As for backgrounds for the classes, since I suck at being creative with these kind of things, I'll let others fill the gap.
For the Universities, you have McGill or Concordia if you want to study in English, or you can go to either Université de Montréal (U de M) or Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) if you want to study in French.

So to be clear, Towny McTownface would be a non-starter?

would have added more but not fully in depth with how to describe some areas. Though for the working poor, I suggest living on a council estate in St Ann's potentially for working poor and also perhaps Bulwell for working class

The first example is a great example, thanks BB! I am especially pleased with this because it would not in a million years have occurred to me to include Kelowna as a hometown, so this is a great example of the community contributing better stuff than I could think up on my own. I hope to find new ways to unlock and harness the creative power of the FA fan community in the future.

Elite: You grow up in the Upper Mission, an affluent Kelowna neighborhood that boasts magnificent views of the city and Okanagan Lake. Your childhood home is a multi-million dollar mansion on your parent's vineyard and winery.
You spend your summers sailing on the lake, or golfing, and winters at your ski-in ski-out chalet at Big White Ski Resort.
Upper middle class: You grow up in Glenmore, an upscale suburb of Kelowna in the Glenmore Valley. Your childhood home is a large ranch-style house on the hillside. Your summers are spent on the beaches of Okanagan Lake or riding your dirtbike on the many trails outside of the city. A season pass at Big White Ski Resort each year means that every winter weekend is spent snowboarding.
Middle class: You grow up in Ellison, a rural suburb of Kelowna. Your childhood home is an older split-level house within walking distance of Ellison Elementary School. You earn some spending money during the summer working on a friend's cattle ranch. Most of that money is quickly spent at Orchard Park Mall.
Working class: You grow up in Rutland, a neighborhood of Kelowna that is often seen as the "wrong side of the tracks" but you just see as "home". Your childhood home is a small, single-level house a short walk from Rutland Middle School.
Working poor: You grow up in Rutland, a neighborhood of Kelowna that is often seen as the "wrong side of the tracks" but you just see as "home". Your childhood home is a dingy fourplex near Highway 97 and Leathead Road.
