Scholar Preview: Culinarian

Hello there backers!

The second public draft of the Scholar class will go up on the blog tomorrow, so keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, I finally put together the first draft of something that I think a lot of people will get a kick out of: the Culinarian archetype for the Scholar class. If you've ever wanted to play a battle chef turning monsters into meals, this is the archetype for you!

While I am relatively happy with the execution here, I'm excited to hear any feedback you have and more than willing to make big changes if I think it would improve the archetype. Please take a look and share your thoughts!

Thanks,

Benjamin

This subclass sold me on patronizing!!

I assume that the increased max HP gained from eating a meal goes away after the next long rest. It would be good to specify that (especially if that’s an incorrect assumption) in the feature.

Overall, I really love it! I just have a few small (and I mean SMALL nitpicks): 1. In Waste Not, Want Not, how long does it take to harvest ingredients from a corpse? Is it an action, that you can take in combat, or is it meant to be done during a short rest? Also, is it the same time for the various size categories, or different? 2. Do ingredients ever expire? You make it clear when and how meals do, but there's nothing about whether or not it happens to the ingredients themselves. 3. In Culinary Craft and Advanced Ingredients, the extra meal benefits feel a little crunchy. It requires the DM to reveal details about the creatures that they might not want the party to know yet, and the mystery benefits, while fun, can add a lot of extra creative work for a DM. I just wonder if there might be a less numbers-based or DM-dependent way to make it work.

That is the coolest praise I can get! Thank you!!

I like the scholar class, but when I saw the email about a culinarian, I wasn't very interested. But I downloaded it for completeness and then read it over. Wow! I seriously LOVE this concept! Curse you for offering far more awesome ideas than characters I can play.
