the Sorcerer Revisited

In the last week I've been working on a slight rebuild of the sorcerer class to improve its identity and niche in the game. I got a bit of feedback on an earlier version earlier this week from /r/unearthedarcana but today I'm hoping to get feedback from all of you. Presented here are two very similar options for a sorcerer rebuild.

In option 1, sorcerer's pool of sorcery points gets bigger by leaps and bounds as they level up. This gives them a ton of flexibility but, in practice, might lead to spamming their highest level spell slot over and over again.

Option 1: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Er4Ohgo9ZqUnEdxuwigB32NKc6yfio93-binvOo9Vos/edit?usp=sharing

In option 2, sorcerer's pool of sorcery points gets slightly bigger as they level up and they gain the ability to completely refill their pool of sorcery points once a day (twice a day at higher levels). This maintains most of the flexibility of option 1 but adds in a bit of constraints so that spamming your highest level spell slot may not always be the most efficient use of your sorcery points.

Option 2: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1G5QxsYzt4dsB7gy4nnXrfnx6OuvUiq5k4rWw1m_A874/edit?usp=sharing

Vote early because I'd like to incorporate the feedback received here into the post for this upcoming week. I hope you like this revision of the Sorcerer class and thanks for your support!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Ross. I'll review the Greenheart and compare it again to existing archetypes but my feeling is that it works as is. I'll still review it though so I can build a strong case for that rather than just saying that's my opinion. :P You bring up a great point about maximum spells. I don't think I'll address that in this go around but after getting more feedback from the general blog reading public I think I'd like to increase that amount.

Thanks for the feedback! In option 2 it actually isn't tied to a short rest it just takes an action to refill their sorcery point pool. Ultimately moving to spell points does actually have the impact of allowing the sorcerer to throw out more low level spells with positive tweaks although how low level will depend on the individual sorcerer and spells they've selected. I do agree with you about potentially stepping on the warlock's toes though and wanted to avoid short rest refreshing spellcasting for exactly that reason.

I chose option 1 because I thought that having a 'spell slot' mechanics tied to short rests might step on the Warlocks toes a bit. I do feel that the Sorcerer needs something the make it stand out from the Wizard. It could be interesting to see a quantity Vs quality dynamic where the Wizard is better at using high level spells but the Sorcerer can throw out a lot of low level spells with the addition of meta magic to make them more interesting and versitile.

I voted for the smaller pool that refreshes because I think that having a smaller pool is a lot more manageable, but I also feel that being able to get all of your sorcery points back as an action is a little too powerful. Maybe at later levels, that would be okay, but I think I'd prefer to see it operate almost like Arcane Recovery, in which you can choose to get them back a certain number of times per day after finishing a short rest. That just makes more thematic and mechanical sense to me. Also, as a side note, Greenheart's Verdant Soul feature seems way too strong. An additional two hit points per level (which is straight up the Tough feat), in addition to healing for every single sorcery point spent (also in combination with the healing spells druid gets access to) just all seems insanely strong. One final note: I mostly think the sorcerer is a very solid class, but my biggest gripe with it is that it only gets 15 spells, which is the exact same number a paladin can prepare with a +5 ChaMod. I feel like a dedicated spellcasting class should have the ability to learn more spells, so I'd like to see them have the same number that warlocks de facto get, which is 19.
