Working on extensive revisions to Magus

Hey everybody! While the blog has been a bit slower this month I am behind the scenes writing up a storm. Soon a complete version of the critical hit charts will be available as well as the next version of the Magus - and that's what I am posting to ask you about today! The Magus is currently suffering a bit for lack of unique spells. I'd like to come up with some generic ones shared across all Eldritch Societies and some specific to each society. As I do that I am also reviewing the Eldritch Society benefits to the Mystic Mark feature and wondering about simplifying the Mystic Mark feature by placing more of those effects in spells. I feel this would have the added benefit of streamlining the most complicated feature of the clasd. What do people think about that? Looking forward to reading your thoughts! Benjamin

Cool I really hope you do

Not a dumb question. Depending on patron interest I will circle back around to the Scholar in the coming months.

Sorry this is a dumb question but youre still going to do the Scholar later right?

Very excited to see an updated version of the magus. I was a huge fan of the magus in pathfinder and the duskblade in 3.5. I love what you have done with the class so far and will probably be playing it in an upcoming campaign. When I do play it I'll be sure to leave some feedback but here are some initial thoughts. I really like the idea of having unique magus spells, especially more cantrips. I’ll be very interested to see what you come up with here. I like mystic mark but I would be okay with losing it if the class received something else in its place. Currently it’s one of the big draws to the class because you can get really awesome benefits from them without having to spend spell slots. Keep up the great work!

Sorry it took so long, but I got really busy. I only have 3 spells for you at the moment (feel free to modify them) but I'll probably add a few more tomorrow. Interesting feedback! Thanks for your thoughts guys, it definitely helps to know that you both seem to feel very emphatically that the change would be a bad one!

I would disagree with simplifying mystic mark, it feels about right as it is now, the special effects of each subclass is what really makes this class shine IMO. Unique spells would be nice but I don't think they should take the place of MM. I agree with Ross that if you want to make spells that work with MM, just make them remove the mark similar to each sub-classes feature. Speaking of spells, I think I might draft a few up tonight or tomorrow!

While I like the idea of streamlining the Mystic Mark, I'm not sure how I feel about the indirect nerf the entire class would receive by placing the ES-Mark Improvements in spells, thereby increasing each option's resource cost. It works very nicely to have those effects simply remove the Mark since the Magus gets a bunch of MM uses, but putting those on spells costs the much more scarce resource of spell slots, not to mention crowding the spell list with additional spells, making the admittedly larger-than-other-half-casters spells known feel a bit more claustrophobic. In the end, I have faith since you tend to put out very high quality homebrews, but I have to admit that the direction for the Mystic Mark benefits concerns me slightly.
