Writing Blog - Xiao Shuang

Believe it or not, Xiao Shuang was one of the first characters created for Ave Xia Rem Y. The main character being engaged or having some sort of childhood friend he has promised himself to is a fairly standard trope, so obviously, I was going to use it. The only question was which type of scenario I was going to use for Ave Xia Rem Y.

For example, there are stories in which the fiancée breaks of the engagement because the MC is “trash.” There are stories in which someone from a powerful faction shows up in town, sees the fiancée has potential and takes her to his/her Sect. It can also be that rather than seeing potential, this person is a big shot that wants the girl for himself. 

I considered all sorts of scenarios like that before settling on the one used for Ave Xia Rem Y. The biggest deciding factor was that I didn’t want the first love interest introduced to be unpleasant. I wanted someone who’d immediately be sympathetic. 

That’s how Xiao Shuang took form.

The character of Xiao Shuang was one I was very excited to introduce, but you know what? I completely misjudged the amount of time it would take to do so! Before I knew it, the story didn’t have any female characters because Xiao Shuang was supposed to be the first (important) female character introduced!

Writing Liu Jin and Xiao Shuang’s scenes has been my biggest challenge so far. I don’t consider myself a romance guy. It’s not my forte. However, their scenes required that sort of vibe. Since the two are so young, their relationship is one that needed to be portrayed in a very innocent way, which was hard for me to do. 

To make matters worse, Xiao Shuang would only be in the story for a few chapters, before she had to leave. I had to make the readers like her in a short amount of time.

That’s why it was a huge relief for me when people told me they liked Liu Jin and Xiao Shuang’s scenes together. I’m glad people like Xiao Shuang.
