Supes

Vani and I went out and saw Superman on Tuesday. I’d been looking forward to it since the first trailer, hoping it would be a Superman story good enough to get the taste of Snyder’s Man of Steel out of my mouth. It was. I loved it. I thought the acting was great, the story was good, and the side characters were done very well. I enjoyed Krypto, but felt like he could have saved Superman’s ass one less time. My big sticking point, and this is a SPOILER, deals with the killing of Malik by Luther. It’s not the actual act itself, it’s that I don’t feel like a moment that dark was treated properly by the rest of the movie. Up to that point Luther is whiny, sniveling, almost pathetic. I was expecting him to portray a more evil side after the murder, but he just sort of goes back to being this brat. By the end, when Superman is speaking to Luther after he’s been defeated, you wonder if the movie remembers the killing at all (oh look! He’s on that newspaper in the closing scenes…). It was used as a plot device to propel a side character into action, but it didn’t add to Luther’s development. In light of that, it feels cheap. Overall, it was still an excellent movie, full of positivity and hope that I desperately wanted to see. I think it’s a promising cornerstone to the new DC Universe.

Can’t get away without a Battletech update these days! I joined a local league beginning in September. It will be a five-game “escalation” format. This means we all start off with a relatively small force. These are measured in points and 200 is the initial size. Every month/game we’ll each add 100 points to our force, topping out at 600, which is relatively huge. I intend on getting my ass kicked, but it gets me out of the house and interacting with new people. Bring on the defeat!
