Work & Videos: An Update

Hello everyone. Hope you've been enjoying the holiday season!

As you may have seen if you follow me on Twitter or frequent the Discord, I've had to get go back to work. The good news is, it's only part-time, so I don't have to go back to the rare uploads of the last couple years, but unfortunately it does mean I'm unlikely to keep up the two-videos-per-month schedule I've mostly maintained since losing my last job.

You all came through wonderfully when I needed a boost. The fact that I can do part-time work instead of needing to go back to a full 40-hour work week is because of your generous support, and I appreciate that immensely. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts to deliver cult classic analyses, long-requested analyses of beloved games, and examinations of a beloved MMO at the height of its absurd popularity, I wasn't able to grow the series like I needed to keep going full-time. This channel grows consistently, but slowly, and while that is a blessing I'm very thankful for, it's become clear that my efforts to grow it more quickly don't have the same effectiveness.

I do, however, plan to keep making videos regularly. I've adjusted to the new workplace and I'm working some full-time shifts during the holiday break (the job is in afterschool services for kids, so there's more to be done when school isn't in). Once these full-time shifts are over, I'm diving back in to treating Games as Lit. like half of my full-time job. I'm focusing on analyses since I still have a request backlog, and hope to manage at least one analysis video per month: more, if possible. And since I won't have this part-time job over the summer months, it's my hope that I can still devote a full-time work schedule to the webseries when that time arrives.

Short version: I'll still make videos, and do my best to keep the content regular and high-quality. It just won't be the idyllic vision of full-time work that I'd hoped.

With that in mind, if your support was conditional on my full-time pursuit of Games as Lit. 101, I completely get it. I'm disappointed that I can't continue as well, and any who choose to withdraw or reduce their patronage have my understanding. For those who stay, I'll do my best to keep delivering some good deep dives into the games you love over the next while.

Thanks again for helping support me during this experiment. It's been a rough month as I've reckoned with coming up short, and I can't help but feel that I've let you down (and myself, for that matter). But I'm reminding myself how kind and supportive you've all been. I hope you'll stick around to see what this channel can do in the future.

Measured and realistic expectations are key to any endeavour. While I was disappointed that more people didn't get into the quality work you've put out, I'm more then happy to stick around. I'd rather you put out work slowly then burn yourself out.

Congratulations on your new job

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't make it to your goal of being able to do Games as Lit full time, but I think that the arrangement you describe definitely sounds like progress toward that goal. While I would love to see you able to do this full time, if only so that we had more videos to look forward to, the important thing is that you're happy and financially secure. I'm honored to support you whether you put out two videos a month or two videos a year. Congratulations on your new job and having worked out a plan for taking things forward. I can empathize with the disappointment of not quite getting the channel to the level that you'd have liked it to be, but you have in no way let yourself or any of us down and you have no end of things to be proud of with regard to your work here. You do good work, Prof, and I can't wait to see more. :)

Financial security comes first :) Even if this isn't what you might have intended initially, congrats on your new job, and keep my wholehearted support. The videos will come out when they come, and in the meantime I'd rather know you and your loved ones are doing well. I will, of course, welcome your future videos with the usual delight ^_^ (Any chance you'd check out Eastshade by any chance? ๐Ÿ˜‡)

It's always worth the wait!

Always happy to get an update, no matter the content. You have one of the most thoughtful and nuanced minds on this platform, regardless of the frequency or volume of content. Thank you for sticking with it as long as you have.

I'm sticking around.
