The breakdown | Lucky charms

The breakdown has a NEW look and with a whole NEW meaning. I won’t be breaking down everything— the purpose of The Breakdown is to talk about my creative process and how I make studying art fun for me. My hopes are that other creatives find inspiration and start asking questions themselves.

Concept | Lucky charm theme purses/wallet

Revisiting this months theme through the lens of fashion— the direction for, the style of purses leaned on a very niches, wacky, replica/on the nose design type purse. Using this months theme further, I decided to design a few that were straight forward. Lucky for me I’ve broken my process down as a way to go back and study my own art step by step.

If you’re interested in these ABD yourself and want to study my process as well you can Download all of the breakdowns your self at the end of the post.

The breakdown

And with that— how will I determine the features of my purse design? The type of purse that Im modeling my concept around exists and so I start with studying the common features and it elements. I’ll eventually gather some creative concepts that will help me personalize this concept. But what determines logical and creative concepts?

Logic:

Creative ( Style):

Now all the questions and factors can be seen as both logical and creative , its just depends on where I was when thinking about these ideas.

Now it didn’t take me long to determine the features Im seeking to use for my illustrations. the essence of a real life purse and features I wanted to explore was the stitching, Adjustable straps and a satchel cross shoulder bag reference.

These features on such an illustrations to me—signals practical. Practical just meaning, a believability prototype, concept and article that could be functional in reality. However, since I plan on revisiting these fashion concepts for a future toy and fashion projects Im working on— these concepts could read better translating as practical. Giving me a clear idea of how use them in those other venture. Other ways to get the process flowing is how I make my concept evolve. Purses have straps— can I explore strap designs?

But also what does that looking like? Playing a mini game of Ispy, I go mining through Pinterest, tumblr or where ever you get your resources, to find the closes thing I can imagine.

Cant find anything? I need to make it and maybe even construct a visual. Let’s Mine for a reference just identical enough and one that I’d like to mimic and trying to make it look as close as possible to my object. I’ll also study my tools within the art program Im using ( if I don’t have a tool I use to make that reference).

Now fur straps didn’t work for me but, I kept up with this month themes and The key notes by, using jade beads to make a purse strap. And though that was a dead end for this project I have a mental and virtual library of images I can use later.

So far I’ve enjoyed making these concepts and also seeing what type of ideas I visited along the way. Now these types of tips and ideas are easy or something you already do. However, the visuals is what I wanted you to focus on. I want to show you what concept art, art study and art prep looks like for me and how you can make your notes fun. Concept art is a stage that you can compare to Preheating or prep for a meal. Making an Idea/concept can be a tedious process but, can also be a map that you designed and can follow/ revisit. This prep features your back up plans or alternative options you can further explore. But if studying is fun you an also improve on skills, building a mental library and so much more the idea of practicing can seem bit less daunting or difficult.

I hope that this helps and I Can’t wait till the next breakdown post .
