Unlike most teenagers, Dartagnan is a Young Crossdress

The people who walk up to him in stores and ask him if he's a boy or a girl, the guys who yell at him to get out of the bathroom when he's using the urinal because they only see his long blonde hair and pretty face.

Since he was a small child, he has gravitated toward girly things. The color pink. Dancing in frilly dresses, especially a yellow one that belonged to his sister. He loved to wear it and carry around a little parasol for fun when he was small.

He always has been a performer, an active little sprite who showed his physical prowess by climbing before he could walk and couldn't keep still.

His mother, Sarah, never felt weird about him favoring feminine objects and mannerisms, something that he easily channeled through dance classes and performances since he was 5 years old.

But when it came time for Dartagnan to go to school, the single mom encouraged him to leave dresses at home. While it was more socially acceptable for girls to play with trucks and avoid wearing feminine clothes such as dresses, there often was a different reaction from society when her son behaved like a girl.

She controlled how he dressed when he left the house until he was in third grade.

"And then I realized, what am I doing?" she said. "I was creating this stigma. I was sending the message that you have to hide who you are."

It dawned on her that creating these rules about who her son could be at home, but not in public, was actually creating shame for her child. So she quit encouraging him to wear more masculine clothes expected for boys. She realized that just wasn't Dartagnan, and that was OK.

And at school, no one really cared, unless he wore a dress on the monkey bars, and then he needed shorts underneath just like girls were expected to wear.

It hasn't been easy. There was some bullying at school and Dartagnan faced mean, hateful things, just as Sarah feared, including death threats on social media from other kids.

But they've also had a lot of support, including from teachers and school administrators, trusted friends and other parents and families of gender non-conforming children.

One time, a school principal asked Dartagnan what his preferred pronouns were, trying to be sensitive to whether he wanted to be called "he" or "she" and acknowledge that others shouldn't assume his gender identity.

"I'm just Dartagnan," he replied, shrugging.

Ultimately, Dartagnan is just himself. He's a boy who likes to perform as a female. It's different than being transgender, which would be the case if he felt he was truly a girl inside a boy's body.

Dartagnan knows people get confused sometimes, but he doesn't think it's worth correcting people if they call him a girl because it doesn't really matter to him.

Dartagnan, who uses the female name Victoria, attends all Pride events in Her community, always looking like a beautiful girl.

Dartagnan, also participates in the female Beauty pageants, dressed as a dazzling girl
