Painting AMG´s Gambit - Part 3

Hi Folks,

Here is the final episode of AMG´s Gambit, where we will create the showbase and add the final touches to our model!

This base is a perfect example of how the base and the presentation of a model can elevate it from something that could still be a well-painted tabletop model to a showcase model.

I have talked about the importance of bases a few times before...

A well-done base can be key to making a whole project work; it embeds the figure in its own world and can help to detail the setting.

Here in this case we are going more for a surreal base/presentation of the model. We are creating giant floating cards, that our Gambit is kinda surfing on. The cards underline the energy that the figure conveys and are a signature element of the character Gambit.

We are using a miniature card game to build our base!

Pelle was so kind to give his poker deck...

We are stacking the cards around the plinth to create a dynamic flow of cards.

We are creating a base that works from multiple sides and leaves different exciting options for placing the figure.

For the paint job, we will be starting with a translucent layer of color through the airbrush. This way we can simply paint the symbols kind off semi-freehand on top!

We are replicating the effect of the magenta energy boost using two super cool elements; Lightning bolts and translucent flames.

We are using natural roots to create lightning bolts and energy sparks!

Most people use thin wire to create miniature lightning bolts or energy sparks, but quite often it results in something almost worm-like, with too-soft edges.

Another downside of wire is that it is very difficult to create the typical branching of a lightning bolt. If you glue wires together you almost always see where you have glued them together, because the glue builds up a little too much.

The roots have natural branches! Usually, roots can grow much finer than twigs because they grow protected by the ground and are not exposed to wind, rain, etc.

Time to start garthering your own green bitsbox!

I sugessted my friend and long-time supporter Jonas Sturesson to used the "root trick" during a coaching session To spice up his Odin.

You can see below how much a detail like that can change the figure dramatically!!

Back to our base:

Another super cool little feature on the base is the translucent flames!

The flames are done super simple, almost too simple.

I have spread thick super glue on a piece of backing paper using a toothpick.

I tried to make swirly moves that resembled flames. After a whiff of super glue accelerator, the flames are ready to be used!

Alright, Thanks for your support! I hope you will enjoy this Video!

If you are at the Adepticon make sure to say Hi!

Side note :

To be honest I rarely had so many fails during a recording than with this base, two times things broke off, I touched the wet paints of the cards,

and chipped paint.

We all know it, some days are just like this... I left all the oopsies in the video!

Not only for your amusement but also because they made me change my painting approach in the middle of the painting process.

Even though I had expected the path to get there to be different, I really like the final result. A bit more textured than I imagined it, but it works very well with the textures and the colors of the model itself.
