One element I loved in this version was how Krypton was treated from Clark's point of view. Many versions have a hologram or consciousness of Jor-El who is able to explain everything to Clark. This version introduced the language barrier and made the whole affair even more confusing/distressing for Clark, which I liked more and more when the story kept returning to that plot point.
Superman learning that people from his birthplace once tried to invade Earth, and how heartbroken he is - that's some good angst. And again - the language barrier limits how much of the whole situation he actually understands. Even by the end, I think he's only vaguely aware that the holographic man on the spaceship is his father.
