movie plot is the average unemployed friend on a random tuesday

I'm with Mason on this one.I'd give it a 2.75/5. On metascore/metacritic it's at 39/100. Blair With was creepy, because most of it spins in you're head because they don't show much.On this one they hit you in the face with the "scary" things.I liked the first half more because i didn't find the "monsters" not scary or creepy at all.I liked the car scene(very creative) and the death scenes but again, it was not creepy or haunting.Could have been a lot better. I also think jump scares are NOT a proper way to create tension or a haunting feeling in a horror movie. They're a cheap way from film makers to scare you.The best horror movies slowly build tension over time like Alien,Jaws or Shining. This one was short fun but nothing more.

To explain: The stone is real but it's power is essentially tied to the person's faith and belief. It's physically there but the power isn't physically in the stone.

Sarah

Catching up on reactions this weekend so I'm only just now watching this. And I'm sure others already replied but the catacombs are a real place! Neat, and creepy. Lol

Sarah

Goddamn what a film im not surprised Oak gave a 5, im not too far off with a personal 4.3, surprised that DD actually gave a higher score than Quinn & Answer

Steven W

Love that you watched a movie with a “philosophers Stone” before starting Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Although I don’t think you did that on purpose 😂

Clorox bleach G

Holy shit i actually screamed with the jump scare when Benji dropped 😂😂😂

Steven W

If you guys are looking for more found footage, the v/h/s franchise is great. More disturbing than jump scary, and for a really disturbing scary movie made by the director of this movie would be Poughkeepsie tapes.

earlthegoddd

I saw it in the theater for my birthday, and it’s been my fave ever since. Love the girls!

Jennifer

I wouldn't call this a horror movie in the traditional sense, more of a suspense/thriller with some horror element thrown in. My claustrophobia is so bad at times where I can't even wear gloves because I hate my hands feeling restricted.

Joey Patterson

One good takeaway for this film is that horror does not necessarily have to be a specific kind of scary. Horror is such a big genre, that something not having many jump scares, or having a lot of "scary" or gruesome scenes doesn't mean it's not a horror film.

Frederick

Yes. The real stone did exist originally in this movie. At least thats how I took it. But once they entered the upside down, it stopped working, and everything was all a mirror of yourself. So, things reversed. Hence all their guilt, or regrets, or even fears, manifested. What was once outside, became within, and what was once within, became outside. Like as Above, So Below. Great reaction!

Nightrel

This is one movie I find extremely unnerving. I'm not a religious person but occasionally there's a religious-esque horror that gets to me and this is what I think of when it comes to representing hell. I actually find it less scary if it's full horror, I think it works better as just disconcerting sorta like cosmic horror so I was terrified of this movie the first time I saw it and it still gives me the heebie jeebies lol

M K7001

Yes, the catacombs are real. Also, this is the first film that got filming approved in the catacombs.

This movie is just meh to me, it did get better on my second watch (this will be my third full watch). But still one that I find I skip to about the halfway point when watching reactions to it. I'm a fan of Ben Feldman (I recommend Superstore tv show with him) which is the only reason I gave it a shot. And I hate Scarlet every rewatch. At least in the beginning, she gives the okay to not feel bad for her as she has willingly chose to put herself in danger. So I do give her credit for that. I will say I do like the premise of the story as I'm a fan of Dante's Inferno (9 Circles of Hell) so if you've read the Divine Comedy, you know what to expect. I find a lot of people were surprised because they were unaware of the story and the dead give away "Abandon All Hope." The title itself is also from the Comedy but the former is more well known phrase.

Megan

Yes! I honestly went in expecting a cheesy, low budget horror film and it turned out to be one of my favorites! I've seen it several times!

Megan

So just a quick info for you guys Nicholas Flamel is a real person that lived in Paris, in the 14th century but he never did alchemy (some people just attributed some alchemy text to him in the 15th and 16th century which he didn't write) he was just very rich and some speculations as to where is fortune came from led to the birth of the famous Philosopher stone legend (that harry potter and other pieces of fiction used) And as for the catacombs , yes they are real and you can visit them in Paris (or venture in them illegaly if you dare, some people love to do that) and the bones we're seeing in the start of the movie are real bones from cemetery that were emptied

Hugo Pontgelard

Also love oak’s Beyoncé reference in the beginning 😂

Mia shumba

Agreed 👍 one of a kind

Mariia K 🇺🇦

Scariest Harry Potter movie I've ever seen. It's time for the Paranormal Activity movies.

Ron Banks

One of my favorite horror movies!! because the story is very disturbing I love the idea all of them suffering in different circles of hell and guilt compared to more traditional jump scare horror!

Mia shumba

DD I saw this in theaters and it was absolutely terrifying!

BugBite23

Damn it I wanted Benji to survive the most

ShaniaBaddie4life

They were the first film crew ever allowed in to the Paris Catacombs. One of the lead actors (Ben Feldman AKA George) is seriously claustrophobic had to stop frequently, his anxiety is all genuine. Poor guy. Couldnt pay me enough! lol

JenVonLee

When I get home I'll be watching this with dinner.

earlthegoddd

You should add The Descent to your list of horror movies! It's honestly one of the best horror movies ever made. It's similar to this movie in terms of it taking place in a cave setting.

Megan Schnese

Watching with you guys now! The catacombs are a real place! This movie is great!

BugBite23

Yes the catacombs in Paris are real.

Frank the Tank

This is one of my FAVORITE movies. I’m so excited to watch along with y’all!!!

hails

Really interested to see what y'all think of this one! This is one of those horror movies that surprised me with its storytelling. When I first saw it, I went in blind and it took a while for it to click and then I recognized what they were drawing their inspiration from.

Bluhawke

Let’s go!!!!

Olive_Sandy

As above So below. As within So without. As the universe. So the soul

I have waiting for this! This is one of my favorite horror movies, there are so many things involving this movie that I really like, most of it related to Dante Aligheri´s Inferno from The Divine Comedy. Some interesting points: • They actually got permission to film inside of the catacombs in Paris. • Siouxsie 'the banshee' is named after Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie and The Banshees. • The title of the film comes from Masonic teachings and lore which in turn is based heavily on Christian language and belief. Specifically being transcribed from a part of the "Lord's Prayer" in which the phrase 'on Earth as it is in Heaven' refers to God's will being carried out both in Heaven and on Earth as he sees fit. • Ben Feldman (George) actually suffers from minor claustrophobia. He had to keep taking “bathroom breaks” to cope with it. • The 'hole' the 3 jump down to escape 'hell' is possibly a reference to Dante's Inferno: to escape hell Dante has to climb down Satan's hairy belly and into his navel, which - it is said - is the center of the earth. Here gravity is reversed, down becomes up, hence the jump and fall return them to street level above. • When the group enters the first tunnel, they encounter La Taupe, who was believed to be dead for 2 years. La Taupe is, in fact, dead and is stuck in Limbo. This is proven by La Taupe's inhuman speed to move through corridors. Also, later on when the group goes underwater and emerges, they are soaking wet, while La Taupe is completely dry. In Dante's Inferno, the First Circle of Hell is Limbo. Limbo is where souls go when they've done no evil but haven't done enough good to get into Heaven. •The cave with the writing, "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here" is not actually the Gates of Hell as some believe. The actual Gates of Hell is the hidden entrance that Papillon uses to smuggle the group into the Catacombs. Shortly after the group enters, Papillon instructs they climb up through bones. As they climb, the tunnel collapses behind them and the group ends up in the same room they just were in. Their only option is to listen to La Taupe who says, the only way out is down. In Dante's Inferno, once Dante enters Hell, he is unable to leave the same way he came. He must continue downward through Hell where the only exit is at the very bottom of Hell, which is exactly what happens to the group. This point also coincides with when scarlet said that they would be force to crawl on their bellies through the entrance of hell. They crawled through those bones and it felt more like hell than the supposed gates of hell were at.

I came here wondering if yall posted and saw this immediately lmao
