I want you to know that I have eyeholes. Look into my eyeholes

Kevin Landon

The politics of the movie were made much more vague than it was in the original graphic novel. In the GN, V wasn't a "freedom fighter", he was specifically an Anarchist. Anarchism is an actual philosophy, and during the government overthrow he admitted that it was possible that his anarchism would devolve into chaos that might actually be worse than the current oppressive regime. He hopes otherwise, he hopes that it will lead to a better society, but the the story is far less certain. The Norsefire political party -- which is never named in the film but is shown on-screen once -- is a white supremacist and xenophobic party directly based on the Nazi party. It wasn't just 'oppressive', it was explicitly genocidal. It was reflective of the rise of Neo-Nazism in the UK in the '80s. When the movie first came out I was on the side of the people who said it was cowardice to walk all of this back, since it was the whole POINT of the GN. It felt like they were too worried about offending people, and just caved for the sake of avoiding controversy, since if they didn't want to make the same points why adapt THIS story? Now...I think it may have been the right idea, since the film can be continuously applicable from different angles. The problems we have now aren't the SAME problems, although they're very closely aligned, and the message can still connect. I'm not 100% on board, but closer to thinking it was the right idea than I was back then.
