So the way I thought about it, is that for them 4, only two places lit up.. And I'm thinking it only lights up for them, because we saw there are dozens of games as the entire skyline was lighting up with people getting lasered for quitting.
So my guess that both of the games were hearts games for four players, but just different games.. maybe one was easier than the other.. And they chose the harder one.

I don’t know Japanese so I don’t know which one is the literal translation. But I’d like to say that although I agree it’s better to keep the Japanese meanings most of the time than localising it and giving different titles or names familiar to the English speakers, I actually think that the title of the game “game of tag” is a pretty good one because it’s meant to confuse audiences and make the audiences think it might be a traditional game of tag at first but it’s actually not. The same applies to “safe room” - although the objective is not to find the safe room but because it’s called safe room, it’s more misleading, confusing yet interesting to watch for the audiences.
I do like the play of words and the little twist of the rules from the name of the game. In this sense, literal translation may not be as good sometimes.

You’ll find out later that this game is actually specifically designed for them because they’re friends. This game wouldn’t be there if 4 strangers went into the game. I read from somewhere it says in the manga they actually had a hard time finding other game arenas and this was the only one they could find/ leading their way to, so definitely a game made for them specifically to challenge or even laugh at their friendship.
WHY
2024-12-17 00:36:00 +0000 UTC
This game’s meant to be confusing and it’s done on purpose. It’s not only playing with the players’ heart but also playing with audiences’ mind. The rules are really poetic when you think about it. It’s the flipping of hide-and-seek part (that is the beauty of the game) which makes the wolf-lamb game so well-designed and heartbreaking.
1. At first, they’re going against each other with the wolf hiding and the lamb seeking the wolf (1st flip of the rule) when typically it’s the lamb that has to hide.
2. Then, they’re willing to sacrifice themselves for one person to survive, the lambs are indeed hiding so that the wolf won’t find them as the rules said and as the show keeps emphasising “hide well, lambs” (2nd flip).
3. At the same time, Arisu as the wolf at the end also wants to sacrifice himself and let his friends survive. That’s the reason why the wolf wants to find the lamb (3rd flip). “A lamb found by the wolf” is actually the 3rd flip. At the end, not just the lamb wants to sacrifice, but the wolf also wants to give up and sacrifice. All of them are sacrificing - wolf searching for the lamb and lambs hiding - doing exactly what the rules said. That’s why even though it originally doesn’t make sense if the wolf finds the lamb when he knows only the wolf can survive, it later makes sense when Arisu as the wolf tries to find the lamb because he wants his friends to survive and live. Oak was actually right pointing this phrase out. There’s nothing wrong with the translation in the instruction. It’s purposefully written that way.
Also, to think that Karube and Arisu had earned five more days of visa, they didn’t even have to play this game in the first place, just make Karube’s death even more sad. He didn’t have to die if he didn’t choose to go into this game to help Chota.
WHY

Season 2 is a level-up. As much as I love Season 1 which is phenomenal, Season 2 is even better, more epic and mind-blowing than Season 1. It’s rare for shows to exceed people’s expectations in the second season or be so good when the first season is already up there, but this show definitely does.
WHY
2024-12-16 22:16:20 +0000 UTC
Really great commentary. One thing to add: I think the “weapons” are two swords - one is as you said intended as weapons in a stranger situation but they could be intended as tools in a friend situation where everyone is calm enough to figure something out with the tools. The writer did mention that there’s a solution where no one has to die (even though this game is specifically designed for Arisu and his friends) but never said what the solution is. So there’re speculations that tools can be useful and not used as weapons.

Season 1 of Sweet Home is really good but I couldn’t finish Season 2 of Sweet Home after the first two episodes. Season 2 has a different vibe with all the added characters.
WHY
2024-12-16 17:50:10 +0000 UTC
Another speculation/theory is to use reflection, perhaps all staring at the water with the reflection of the eyes of the wolf so all of them became wolf. The writer said there’s a way out so that no one has to die from this game but never said the solution.
WHY
2024-12-16 17:38:04 +0000 UTC
It's very easy (and dangerous) to make up rules that don't exist in these games. 😅 Here the only rules were that the wolf role can be transferred and that the collars of the lambs would explode at the end.
The solution was to work together and remove the collars from the lambs, with the tools freely provided, within the time limit.
If it had just been the three friends they might have made it. :( gg, everyone

I watch a couple episodes of the 2nd season.
for me the acting of some characters is too much (overacting?), so I couldn't bear to continue. It might work for animated or theatre stage where you have to let all the emotion out.
but that's just my opinion and taste; most people still love it.

I was definitely confused by the intention of the rules as well. I think the only scenario where this ruleset works is if it's a group of friends playing. Like you guys said, if it's 4 strangers playing, they wouldn't care about killing each other. I was still very surprised that they killed off the characters, though; I really thought they'd find a way out.

I, too, think that a translation that distorts the intent is not a good idea.

"oni-gokko” is a word in itself, and no Japanese person thinks of "demon" when they hear it.
In the context of “oni-gokko,” the word “oni” is like the English word “tagger".
Therefore, I think “game of tag” is appropriate to reproduce the feelings of the characters in the story when they hear the word “oni-gokko.
swingo
2024-12-02 08:07:16 +0000 UTC
I am not a good English speaker, so perhaps “literal translation” was a bad idea.
Generally, when “game of tag” appears in an English show, it is translated as “oni-gokko” in Japanese subtitles.
So, from a Japanese point of view, I think Netflix's translation correctly conveys the intent.

So for the game, the rules explicitly say the lambs have to find the wolf. So the wolf has to hide to win. I think it gets a little confusing when it says "the lamb must hide so the wolf doesn't find them." I've seen this episode so many times and it did confuse me the first go around too. Basically, because it's a game of hearts, the goal is betrayal. It just so happened that this group was 3 close friends so it was worse than if it were all strangers. They had to sacrifice themselves to chose the survivor and I took the "lambs hide so the wolf doesn't find them" so that the survivor can't sacrifice themselves but also will have survivors guilt. Because, heart messes with your head.
There was no way to save them all and no way for them to all die unless they kept their eyes closed and murdered the wolf. So someone had to survive. The lambs lose regardless. To win, a lamb had to become the wolf, then hide. The weapons were either a red herring or to forcibly take the wolf for themselves. Because like you all immediately thought, a table full of weapons must mean we are fighting/killing someone. I think they were there to confuse and further the betrayal. You go from being best friends to every man for themselves.
So, I watched this series back when it premiered and I remember it doing well, but only amongst fans of the genre/manga. It's in line with stuff I watch anyway so it was in my recommended from the get go/back when Netflix notified of future show/movie releases. It wasn't until Squid Games came out (a year later) that this got highly recommended because of a similar premise. But I don't remember people hating Alice in Borderland and only those new to the genre and unaware would claim this was a rip off of SG. Even post SG, you had factions of people who still prefer this over SG. I love them both!

That is not a literal translation dude, that is what I am saying, it doesn’t matter if the rules are similar. The literal translation of onigokko is “pretend demon” not tag. In the version I am watching, the subtitles for onigokko are “oni and humans” and the object is to find the camp, not a “safe room”. Because they are more confident that the Italian audience will recognize the word oni at least and there is no need to localize heavily. In the same way, in the opening, in English they say “based on a graphic novel”, whereas in the version I am watching it says “based on the manga”. There is less adaptation or localized terms. I have noticed a number of these types of differences but I don’t have a list nor I remember the details right now.

The lambs were told to hide at the end because the play of the game shifted. The game master knew they'd chosen to give themselves up for Arisu, thus telling them to hide well, so their decision would stand. It doesn't matter if that was the decision or the three lambs actively tried to kill the wolf, like it started out with Karube - a Hearts games' purpose is to inflict the most emotional pain, no matter how to achieve it. That's what I took away from it when the game was telling the lambs to hide, like Answer said.

It was a great reaction guys! Heart games are fun huh?
I was super confused when watching this episode the first time until the veery end and it was clear that the only one surviving was Alice. It really makes you think that Alice is gonna figure something out. I still don't know if there is a way for all of them to come out alive. There were theories back when the first season came out, but I don't think there was any other way out.
I think it's brilliant the way it's set up. I think the wording of the game is intentionally written that way so that it may take the players a minute to understand what the real goal is. Gives them a second to panic. If what's-her-name did not run off at the start, making them all respond by knee jerk reaction of- I must survive-, I think the boys would have had to come to the conclusion fairly quickly that only one of them would survive and they get to choose who, but they wouldn't have tried to take the wolf for themselves. Maybe tricking a lamb into becoming the wolf and running away from them, rinse and repeat until the time is up.
As it is, the episode really highlighted for me the human drive to survive and what lengths you would go if faced against someone you love. How long would it take you to think one step further- if I win... What happens when I am the only one left? Is it worth winning?
I think they are called lambs, to both be misleading, and to be able to call them sacrificial lambs with out saying it to the audience's face. And the wolf being the loser in most children's stories is true here too. Alice may have won the game, but he definitely was the loser here.
I think the weapons were intended to be there in case of a wild card. Where the lambs have to defend their chosen survivor from other lambs that decide they want to be the one to survive.
Also, every time I watch this episode I cry. Can't wait for the next episode!

I recommend the anime Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor.
It is based on the manga that started the current trend of the “death game” genre.
It is like an Alice in Borderland games thrown into the Squid Game world.

“game of tag” is a literal translation of the Japanese game name “oni-gokko".
“hyde and seek” is also a literal translation of the Japanese game name ”kakurenbo".

Oak is right.
If you set self-sacrifice as a victory condition, it becomes traditional hide-and-seek.
But this doesn't have to be a group of friends.
Even in a random group, if there are children, the adults might sacrifice self.

I think it’s more like hot potato. Doesn’t really matter if they’re friends or not. The goal is to stay as the wolf while the others hunt you down hence the weapons in the beginning. Now with our characters It came to the three of them sacrificing their life for their one friend. With the rules, we already know that they don’t directly tell you how the game works. like we have seen in the first 2 episodes.

Hey guys. Go easy on yourselves! Just some things to think back on...each game has some small deceptions (e.g. 1st game had 'Alive' and 'Dead' doors which were not reliably named, 2nd game had taggers who were also players, 3rd game the wolf needs to hide from lambs to survive despite the usual connotations about wolves vs lambs). The rules are always 'clear', but the players need to use their smarts to understand that there are loopholes and decide how to play. The rules often come with extra info which may be distracting or helpful depending on interpretation. Maybe the more important thing to think on is that if you rewind to when our 4 players read the rules of this hide and seek game, they understood immediately that the final wolf is the only one who will survive and that it is not a classic hide and seek game. What they chose to do with that was different as they can either betray or sacrifice to win. Shibuki immediately wanted to become the wolf, betray the boys and hide. The friends initially wanted to try to find ways to beat the game, but because she ran away first and Arisu became the wolf and hid after failing to come up with a solution, that tested the friendship. They only all came to their senses when they realised there is no loophole to all survive. It shows why this is a hearts game because out of all the games so far, this one requires you to take a more active role in killing someone else whether they are your friends or not.

To clarify that game cause a lot of people got confused too, it's not really hide and seek, it's hearts game, it toys with people's feelings, the game says the Wolf is the one who will win, there are only two ways to play the game, 1. To try and steal the Wolf from each other which is what they did at the start, and why they may choose a weapon. 2. To all come together and choose one person to keep the Wolf role, the sheep must hide not to run from the Wolf but to allow that Wolf to keep that role and live which is what they eventually did at the end there.
Edit: Spoke too soon, Answer and Oak got it right, the lambs hide not to avoid becoming the wolf but to choose who they want to survive this game and vice versa, the wolf hunts for lambs not to get rid of the wolf role but sacrifice themselves and choose 1 person they want to survive. Hearts is a cruel game, while the game is straightforward it leaves out details or misleading details in the rules to trick players, I believe hearts are the only games that you can't really outsmart, there is no loophole, shortcut, grey area, etc. Unlike other games.

One of the best episodes. The reason it says to hide little lambs is to tell the friends of their one chosen person to hide so that person can survive instead of try to die like Arisu was at the end. Classic heart game :) Also, you guys referenced how hide and seek is normally played. Well we just saw "tag" and those people certainly didnt become "it", they died. So yes, the games arent meant to be literal, just a play on the name.

Self-Sacrificial lambs. Great episode.
I agree that the game may have been a little different if a different dynamic of 4 people showed up. It's a game for 4, so the "light" indicating an open match would've gone off after the number was met, and that's why no one else showed up. But, the psychological/emotional pain of hearts still works with Strangers, because you would have to up close and personal merk everyone else to win. But it's definitely worse with friends.

If this had been 4 strangers, each person would’ve tried to become the wolf and then hide from the lambs.
This was 4 friends who realized that only 1 lives, they chose arisu and hid from him :(

The idea behind the lambs hiding is that they're supposed to choose who they want to live. The reason they hide is so the person who is the wolf won't try and sacrifice themselves instead. Arisu was trying to give himself up at the end and die instead of one of his friends, but his friends hid from him so that he would be the one to live. That's the idea behind the game saying that the lambs should hide.

Don’t know if you will read this but the English translations on Netflix can be a little too free: for example the titles of the games in this series I am noticing are translated freely to a familiar name in English that people recognize but in the original the games have different titles. I am noticing because I am watching with subs in another language and they kept the translation more literal. For example it never was a “game of tag” in the original, nor the objective was called the “safe room”. I don’t know why they chose to do that, like they don’t trust the English speaking audience to get on board with games that have original titles? Anyway, I loved the reaction to this one and the long discussion was well deserved: an amazing episode. The meaning behind being a wolf or a lamb as a result is in the actions you take: the assigned lamb who chases the wolf and catch it becomes the predator and therefore becomes the wolf. There is a moral component but the meaning is more zen than literal…

I'm not going to point out every parallel with Wonderland this show has. For one you've already picked out or have likely guessed a few, and also there's much more that are yet to be revealed as the show progresses. I will, however, share a couple.
The horsehead in episode 2 (yes, it's a horse mask not a cow mask) is supposed to resemble a knight in chess, and chess is an integral uniqueness in Wonderland's character and world design. If this wasn't the case, they would have given the tagger a more generic mask instead. Also, when Arisu's name is written into kana (アリス), it can be read as "Alice" in English. So Alice is literally Alice, just different settings.

So, that was the first hearts game and where the show REALLY starts. Hope you're looking forward to the next one.

Also it’s important to factor in the suit when being told the rules. A hearts game is made to fuck with you. Which by your reaction at the end it totally did. It was never gonna be a simple hide and seek game. You definitely pick up on the nuisance of how messed up this game was the more you watch it. Loved your reaction. Can’t wait for you guys to continue and see your thoughts as the episodes progress.

Loved the discussion at the end! That’s exactly what I would have liked to do after the first time I watched it. I don’t know if anyone told you this before but the name of the show is actually a word play on Arisus name, the Japanese don’t have the letter L or moreso their R‘s can sound like L‘s and vice versa. Arisu is kinda they way the pronounce Alice. Also the title of the show tells you exactly were they are 😁

A common theory on how they could have survived this game is for Arisu to cut his wire when he's the wolf. The instructions imply that only the collars around the lamb's necks will explode. Once his wire is cut, he can transfer the wolf to someone else and cut their wire until only one person is in the game and they're the wolf so everyone survives. They needed to come together to find a solution, but the game twisted their hearts just like it promised. There's no way to confirm this theory now - perhaps Arisu would have just exploded if he tried.

There is manipulation in these games to a certain degree.

i feel like it's quite normal to be confused, but the moment I realized the actual rules, my heart broke in pieces for these characters

I was confused the first watch through as well, mostly because I didnt want to accept that there was only 1 survivor. You also have to keep in mind that the game rules arent always straightforward and that the rules can state one thing but mean something totally different when thought about from another perspective or with gained knowledge. Which this episode is the first to show that the rules can have multiple meanings so it can be tough to pick up on that when the first 2 games we saw were pretty straightforward.

Don't worry, this game is always the most confusing for first-time watchers. I loved the discussion at the end and Oak's and Answer's breakdown of the game. So excited for more!

I think the game is determined once all players are in the game "arena". So maybe if other people would of showed up to the game, it would of been a different type of hide and seek.
But because only those 4 showed up, the game master twisted the game to cater to them.
I think 🤔

god, this episode hurts a whole lot more when rewatching it...i remember holding onto hope for a long time when i first watched it, that they would figure SOMETHING out, literally anything, and then just being shocked more than anything by the end of the episode. But rewatching it? knowing what's coming and having all these flashbacks of them being together? yeah, i know always have tissues at the ready when I watch this episode T_T also, the actors are just freaking amazing. Love your reactions and hope you keep enjoying the show! PS: on the whole "rule" thing for this game, I'M pretty sure there were two main reasons to say the lambs are supposed to hide. Number 1: to throw the players off at the beginning and make them waste time. Because everyones first thought when reading wolf and lamb is, that the lambs have to hide from the wolves rather than it being the other way round. Number 2 shows at the end. The lambs chose the one person they wnated to survive and hid from the wolf. Even though he wasn't part of the decision, they still ended up hiding from him.
